Are leaders born or made? Why? by Dr. Julia Teahen

I ask the same question of all students during the first week of a Leadership course. It is one of my favorite questions because it gets to the heart of the topic we will be discussing over the next six weeks.

Kelsey: That's an interesting question. I guess I've also thought of leaders being born. It seems like you always have those people that step up and take charge. However, now being an Agriscience Assistant I work with FFA students. It's so surprising watching students from the beginning of the year being so shy and quiet and now that they have participated in leadership contest, they are the most active and showing their leadership qualities. So I think leaders can be made. They might already have the leadership qualities inside them they just might need help finding them.

Enis: This is not such a easy question to answer because there are people who think totally different from one another. I personally think leaders are made because as young kids we always had someone to follow and see what they did for us to learn. Not everyone we followed did everything the right way, but when following people some take what is best that they taught us. A good leader is a good listener and someone is not born with leader characteristics we develop these things over time. A good leader takes charge when needed, and a good leader will never know when is the time to take over if they are not learning while going along and following others. I hope that all made sense.

This is not an easy question to answer. However, I believe leaders are made. It's how a person is raised, what their beliefs are, and their education on what makes them a leader. You might be born into a family of leaders, but that doesn't necessarily make you a leader.

Andrew:
I am of the full belief that people are a product of their environments and influences. Leaders are created, but they are created early. Those with the natural ability to lead tend to develop these skills long before they find themselves in a professional environment. These skills tend to emerge in school as well as through interactions with peers. I have found that great leaders are charismatic, something that cannot be taught. So, while leaders may not be born, I certainly believe that the best leaders were nurtured and developed beginning at a young age.

I believe leaders are born and made. Some are born into this world with the attitude of helping others, with wanting to interact well with others in supporting ideas. Some people might not believe it's possible to be born to do such thing without being taught, but some people start as young and an adolescent already walking ahead wondering if they were already here. However, I believe they are made too and that is because while no one might physically teach one to be a leader, one observes their surroundings knowing who they want to be in life. I wasn't taught to be a leader, but throughout the years of being shy and to myself I have watched the outcomes of people who do wrong and right, people who are successful and not successful. I have observed how people rather be treated and acknowledge rather than how some managers treat them. That is because I was born with the since to search for who I wanted to be. There are many people who go from being bossy and believing on their ideas are important to becoming great listeners and combining their ideas, they also become motivational and appreciative about others feelings. So there is no wrong or right answer because great leaders are born and made.

This is a tough question to answer. I think that valid arguments can be made for either side. My intial answer was that leaders are more made then they are born. I say this because in my opinion and from my experiences, most of the people that I would determine to be a leader, have been raised by or learned the trait from either their surroundings or the people they are surrounded by. For example, if someone is brought up and raised by parents who are leaders themselves they could be more likely to become a leader when the situation presents itself. On the other hand, some develop the leadership trait by being forced to either become a leader or not. I know someone who had a rough childhood and was not given any kind of leadership training as a young one but grew up to be a tremendous leader, because they had to.

Deanna: I believe that leaders are made. I believe that anyone can become a leader with the right mindset and values. Leaders become leaders by taking chances, believing in something, and being willing to defend and care for something. I also strongly believe the most important trait for a successful leader is honesty. Being willing to make mistakes, admit them, and learn from them.
