Tittle: Examing the Directors that Challenged the White savior formula

Why does your topic matter?
Can film challenge the status quo of apathy towards the marginalization of the poor, the disenfranshised, the marginalized, those who everyone has given up on? Can films about those characters be made without a white savior? Can a film tackle the issues of marginalization, poverty, oppression without exploiting the poor or instead humanize them?

What will your paper contribute to better understanding your topic?
How film is complicit in forming the opinions of the poor and disenfranched. How filmakers can challenge the predictable formula of the white savior by using examples (like Moonlight and Even the Rain) of directors who create narratives that humanize the marginalized and not rely on stereotypes. Instead of creating stereotypes fimakers are trailblazing by creating archetypes.

What films will you focus on:
I'll reference Moonlight and Even the Rain. Will also use Amistad as the white savior formula that Hollywood traditionally relies on to tell stories about black/natives/ and other marginalized non white folks.

What is the framework you will be using:
Exploring the narrative of the outsider as our moral compass. Like Luke Skywalker in Star Wars i will pin point who Hollywood has traditionally done the opposite with the indigenous. Their traditionally negative portrayals of indigeneous, LGBT, black non white marginalized groups have influence popular culture's opinions of these groups. The more recent films like Even the Rain and Moonlight have countered that formula by making characters (like drug dealers) not fall prey to those predictable storylines and portrayals. The framework will be to examine how these filmakers bucked a system of cliche narrative by creating characters that were three dimensional and complicated.

why this white savior film doesn't work-- "It's sort of a liberal yuppie version of that Disney movie where the brave East German family builds a hot-air balloon and floats to freedom. The problem with this movie is similar to the dilemma in South Africa: Whites occupy the foreground and establish the terms of the discussion, while the 80 percent non-white majority remains a shadowy, half-seen presence in the background.
