Part 3: Reflection in English

What differences have you seen between the Spanish language and your native language? What did you find interesting and exciting about the Costa Rican culture?

The Spanish language has many similarities in English but also has many differences. A big difference is the fact that objects have pronouns! In Spanish, there is also a use of accent marks, and the punctuation use of question and exclamation marks are different. A similarity between the languages is that some of the root words are similar like pantalones and pants. I really enjoyed learning about Costa Rican culture, especially when we talked about housing and families. I found it very interesting whenever we learned about how in Costa Rican there is no military, it was one of the first countries to provide free public education and has more teachers than police. Costa Rica sounds so much safer and focused on peace than the US and I really appreciate that.

What do you hope to learn if you continue to study the Spanish language?

I would hope to continue to learn more vocabulary and get better at pronunciation. One of my goals is to be able to sing and understand songs in Spanish, and what way to start than to learn the language. I would also want to be able to understand what other people are saying in school. Some kids speak Spanish in school so we don’t understand them and I honestly want to know what they’re saying.

We have learned elements of a language in a different teaching/learning style than you may be used to. Talk about your experience with learning Spanish in an online class. What did you like about the course? What did you not like and/or what could be improved?

Personally, I prefer to take a physical approach to classes but, this course ran very smoothly. The last inline class I took typically gave us 2-3 projects every week and this class was a good change. I really enjoyed taking notes where the words were given and then the pronunciation and transplantation were underneath it. I prefer that version over the long videos. I think when giving notes, you could also add more examples and show how everything fits together.

What things did you do that helped you learn Spanish in this course? What things can you do to improve your own Spanish learning in the future?

In this course, I often referred to the Quizlets which helped me a lot. I think I will continue to use those. In the future, I will know to look over my notes more. This will help me with grammar and conjugations. I should also start doing more grammar practices to make sure I understand and correct what I’m doing wrong.

What things did your instructor do to help you with your learning? Was there anything that your instructor didn't do that would have helped you?

My instructor helped me a lot in the sense of vocabulary and conjugation reviews. This really helped me fix and clear up some issues in my writing. After an assignment, my instructor also gave me very beneficial comments with great links so I could grow even more in Spanish.
