Week 15 Article

The article covers the growing increase of fog among major Texas cities such as Houston and Dallas. The increase in fog prompts the EPA (Environmental Protective Agency) to now “seek more fog control”. However, reducing smog is difficult in Texas due to the already existing warm climate. For example, “smog tends to be worst on sunny, hot and stagnant days, when the sunlight and high temperatures accelerate reactions between volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides to form ozone” (Douglas, 2022). In short this advances the chemical reaction in the atmosphere that creates ozone. Increase in ground-level ozone aka smog becomes harmful to humans by “constricting lung muscles, making it harder to breathe and exacerbating lung disease such as asthma” (Douglas, 2022). Yet, Texas is hesitant to implement stricter pollution control requirements due to the economic factors along with its political status. - Ericka
