    A geologist from British Columbia by the name of Charles Fipke was determined to find deposits of kimberlite (rocks sometimes containing diamonds). After 10 years of persevering he  found some in the Lac de Gras region; 7 years later he opened the Ekati mine in October of 1998.

Pulp, paper, and saw mills remain important industry's today, as they have when they started in the early 1890/1900's. As well as wheat and ranching also grew with time. Oil was discovered in 1914 in the Turner Valley, southwest of Calgary.
Exports from the prairies included pulp, paper, and wheat.
The people of the prairies used the flat land to grow wheat, crops and raise animals. 
    One major environmental problem in the Prairies is the rising heat temperatures, which  caused by global warming. Humans have influenced this by finding petroleum in 1914.  An alternative solution is to have electric cars that have very long lasting batteries.    Towns were built next to water ways so that saw and flour mills would have access yo water power.  Water ways also provided for raw materials to be transported to more centralized areas where they could be used for manufacturing activities.
   Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors have operated assembly plants here since the latter decades of the 1900's.
   They used the land to farm and as a tourist attraction.
   One major problem in the are is the severe environmental damage that has resulted from the industrial waste, urban, and smog, as well as industrial developments that have consumed much of the region's richest farmland. The St. Lawrence  and the Great Lakes are heavily polluted now as well.
    Humans have influenced this problem through the development of cars and other automotive that run on petroleum. 
    An alternative solution to this would be to find other ways to power them other than just on petroleum. 
    Finding a solution to this problem has become an issue because we know of ways that we can do this they just aren't small enough to fit into automobiles and what not.
    I think the best course of action.    Fishing was one of the first industries that started in 1497 with the arrival of John Cabot, and is still a big industry today.  Agriculture still remains a big industry today, as well as potatoe farming, orchards, and forestry. Coal mining is another major industry in Cape Breton.
   The forests surved as natural resources for pulp and paper mills.
   A major environmental problem is the polluted seas, the seas are being polluted by the cars and trucks and oil from factories which is killing off the fish and sea animals.  An alternative solution to this would be to find ways to properly dispose of garbage and the oil spills. Finding a solution for this has become a problem because we found a way to use oil once but now we need to find a way to use it after its been burned off.
