The main character of the martian is Mark Watney. He was one of six astronauts that flew to Mars. When the crew is forced to abandon the mission Mark gets separated from the crew and gets left behind. He grows potatoes with his botany powers and jerry-rigs billion dollar NASA equipment. In the book Watney almost kills himself 5 times but he knows that if he gives up then he is dead, so every time he fails or messes up he re-motivates him to find a way to survive. If he gives up it is the same as committing suicide even though you physically don't take your own life.

Resilience is the ability to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. Resilience is important because without the ability to overcome difficult tasks George Washington would have never been able to cross the delaware river. This is an issue that is not solved but a life skill that needs to be learned by everyone. If you master the skill than you can push through difficult time with relative ease.

"According to legend, Thomas Edison made thousands of prototypes of the incandescent light bulb before he finally got it right. And, since the prolific inventor was awarded more than 1,000 patents, it's easy to imagine him failing on a daily basis in his lab at Menlo Park." This quote demonstrates that all the good things in life didn't come easily
