Ashleigh Walker

ENG 200-001

Fitt 3, Lines 1441-1506, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Welcome! For my editing project, I chose this part of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight because it grabbed my attention right away. The boar hunt and the lady’s temptation scene are full of action and deeper meaning. I think it shows how Gawain is tested both physically and emotionally, and I wanted to explore how those moments reflect the idea of what it meant to be a true and honorable knight in medieval times. I also hope to help new readers understand and enjoy this poem more.

I used AI (Gemini) to help strengthen my project by checking grammar, rephrasing parts of my writing, making ideas clearer, and using language that makes sense to readers new to Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. For example, I got help rewording a section I wrote about Gawain being tested by the lady, which helped me explain why that moment is important. AI made the writing process smoother, boosted my confidence, and gave me ideas to better connect with my audience.

Fitt 3, Line 1441, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Quoted Phrase: "the stoutest of bears"

The phrase “the stoutest of boars” introduces an animal that represents more than physical strength. In medieval literature, the boar was recognized for its fierce nature, unwavering strength, and determination to stand its ground. It was considered one of the most dangerous animals to hunt, often requiring skill, courage, and teamwork. Because of this, the boar became a symbol of intense challenge and bravery.

In this section, the boar’s violent energy and refusal to flee reflect the emotional and moral pressure Gawain experiences during the lady’s visit. Just as the hunters struggle to wound the boar’s bristling brow, Gawain must resist the seductive force of temptation. The boar’s toughness and aggression mirror the internal battle Gawain faces. The writer uses this parallel to suggest that true knightly strength involves more than physical courage. It also requires restraint, honor, and the ability to make ethical choices under pressure.

The boar also appears in heraldry, where it symbolizes courage, fierceness, and a readiness to fight. Knights who bore the image of a boar on their shields were seen as bold and unyielding. With the writer choosing a boar for this hunt, they connect Gawain’s test to broader ideas of chivalry and what it meant to be an honorable knight.

Cite: Christe, Yves. “Medieval Manuscripts: The Book of the Hunt, by Gaston Fébus.” Medievalists.net, 20 Apr. 2020, https://www.medievalists.net/2020/04/medieval-manuscripts-the-book-of-the-hunt-by-gaston-febus

It shows a clear difference between what the hunters are going through outside. While they are chasing a wild and dangerous boar through the woods, Gawain is resting in comfort. For someone new to this story, this moment helps show that Gawain's test is different. He is not fighting with weapons. Instead, he is being tested in a quieter and personal way. The luxurious and bright-hued bedcovers paint a picture of the comfort and beauty around him. It hints at the temptation to come, as the lady will soon confront Gawain here, putting his honesty and values to the test.

In stories from this period, the bedroom was often a place where characters had to make big moral decisions. Gawain shows his strength not by fighting but by controlling himself with temptation. The poet uses this peaceful image to build tension, reminding us that even moments of comfort can be dangerous when your values are being challenged.

“Lady Bertilak.” Wikipedia, 6 July 2024, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Bertilak.

Fit 3, Line 1458-1459, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Quoted Phrase: "Though the smooth-shaven shafts were shattered to pieces,

As soon as they hit him, the heads slewed off."

These lines show just how powerful and unyielding the boar really is. The "smooth-shaven shafts" (arrows) do nothing to harm it. Even though the hunters are skilled and well-equipped, the boar's thick hide is too tough to pierce. This part of the story makes the hunt feel intense and dangerous. It also connects to what is going on with Gawain back at the castle. Just like the hunters can't get through the boar's skin, the lady might not be able to get Gawain to give in. Words like "shattered to pieces" and "slewed off" help the reader picture how wild and fast the scene is. When the arrows hit the boar, they break apart or slide off without causing any damage.

Both the physical fight with the boar and the test Gawain faces inside the castle are about endurance. The boar scene shows physical strength, while Gawain's test shows moral strength. The story uses these two scenes side by side to show how being strong is not just about fighting but also about staying true to your values, even when it's hard.

“Boar Hunting from Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.” Wikimedia Commons, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boarhunting2.jpg.

Fit 3, Lines 1479-1482, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Quoted Phrase: “Then, with a loving look, she started speaking:/ ‘If you are Gawain, sir, it seems to me most strange/ That, being inclined to breeding and fine manners, / You’ve no patience with the ways of polite society.”

This moment in the poem takes place during the second day of the lady's temptation of Sir Gawain. She begins with a polite tone, but her words hold a deeper meaning. She question's Gawain's courtesy, saying that for someone known for good manners and noble behavior, he is not acting very friendly with her. This is a clever way of testing him without being too direct. She is using courtly language, but she is secretly challenging his chivalry, or his knightly honor. These kinds of moments are part of a courtly love test, where a lady tries to tempt a knight not just with beauty, but with words that stir up doubt and emotion.

The lady is using emotional manipulation to see if Gawain will give in to her temptation. She mixes praise with guilt, trying to make him feel like he is failing. The real test here is not physical but about staying strong in the face of pressure. Gawain must protect both his virtue and his reputation. This scene shows how battles in stories like this are not always fought with swords. Sometimes, the hardest test is staying true to your values when someone tries to lead you away with charm and clever words.

Courtly love citation: The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica. She graciously leans his way/ And neatly kisses him"

At first, this part of the poem may seem simple. Gawain tells the lady that she may kiss him if she wants. But, in a medieval story like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, even a kiss can be a test. Gawain's words are very courteous, meaning polite and respectful, but they also help him avoid giving a clear yes or no. This is important because the lady is not just being friendly. She is trying to tempt him and see if he will stay true to his promises.

In stories from this time, knights were expected to follow a chivalric code. That meant being brave, loyal, honest, and respectful. At the same time, they were supposed to stay faithful and not betray their lord. Gawain is stuck in the middle. He does not want to offend the lady, but he also does not want to break his word. By speaking carefully, he gives her control over the kiss but still protects his own honor.

This moment shows that the hardest challenges in these stories are not always physical.

Cite: Axen, Christine.

For this project, I made an image using AI that shows two parts of the story happening at the same time. Inside the room, Gawain is with the lady and she is trying to tempt him. Outside the window, a boar hunt is taking place. I used AI to make the image because it was a quick and simple way to bring my idea to life. I felt sure it would turn out well and include the right details to help tell the story.

The picture helps readers understand that Gawain is facing two kinds of challenges. One is the danger of the hunt, and the other is the emotional test with the lady. Showing both scenes together makes it easier for people to see how the poem connects physical action with inner struggle. I hope this visual makes the poem more relatable and helps new readers follow what is going on.
