Crime is a major problem in the Caribbean, with increase in crime rates over the recent years. Slavery has had a drastic influence on this rising crisis in Trinidad and Tobago. These slaves had to fight for survival with other fellow slaves and slave masters constantly due to harsh treatments. As they were from different tribes which were at war with each other in Africa, the Europeans capitalized and maintained further control over their chattel knowing that slaves at odd with each other meant little effective revolts against their authority. As such with the abolishment of slavery the once enslaved were left without sufficient funds and no way of plausible income leading them mainly to a life of poverty. The free slaves now had to find ways of obtaining income by any means as jobs and education was not readily available to them. Even though these services are easier to obtain now, the Africans are already settled in their life of poverty, and as such will do anything to make a dollar. Hence, as the population grows richer due to economic development, there is an increase in crime as persons fight among themselves to obtain what they need to survive.

Caribbean Civilization has been a very educational and enjoyable course this semester. The topics covered were informative and it being directly related to Caribbean history made learning more interesting. This course expanded my knowledge on the first settlers, European rediscovery, slavery, indenturship and the Caribbean as a society by looking at different cultures, festivals, religions, food, music, and many more in a fun way. This is one of the few subjects where I have been excited to learn, looking forward to every lecture and tutorial each week. I appreciated how both lectures and tutorials kept an open forum so persons from varying backgrounds could have an input. Hence, I could learn about different cultures from other countries. The lecturers were also very open and willing to answer any questions and help with any problems experienced clearing up any misconceptions. Tutorials were very interactive and the tutorial lecturer applied varying forms into his teaching for example, skits, videos, and pictures to help stimulate our minds and give us a better understanding of each topic discussed. With assignments and quizzes lecturers were very helpful and gave hints on what needed to be done with constant feedback to achieve maximum performance by students.

Though white collar crime is not actively talked about, it is still very active within the Caribbean. Slavery opened the doors for Europeans to perform their illegal acts as there was no higher authority on the plantations to supervise the slave owners from their respective mother nations. Therefore the rules, regulations and laws established in Europe could be overlooked within the Caribbean. Furthermore, the descendants of these Europeans have continued to occupy the highest social class in society and maintain their authority over the rest of the population in many aspects, including law enforcement. In their leading positions in society, acts of white collar crime committed through deceit and motivated by financial gain occur. For example, schemes by businesses to defraud their customers and tax invasion that goes unnoticed by persons are prevalent until the perpetrator gets too greedy for it to not be noticed. In the case with Allen Stanford and the T20 cricket, where he was accused of money laundering and fraud, raising suspicions with his excessive use of money during matches. Generally this is not done in such a bold manner so it normally goes unnoticed and crime done by the lower class is more preyed upon.

During slavery in the Caribbean, the Europeans kept slaves mainly separated, men and women had different roles and as such the time spent together was monitored as not to cause rebellions. They were not allowed to marry and form close bonds as the slave masters thought that they would easily over throw them. Most times they selected mates that were strong and desirable for females to produce viable offspring, to optimize work. Hence one male had numerous children by numerous females and the home was left fatherless as connections were not allowed to be made, leading to a break down in family life. Presently this epidemic is still prominent within the Caribbean society, with most criminals not having that father figure to guide them within the household. They are raised solely by the female while the male may have children by other women. The women themselves by have different child fathers for their children as such no real connection within the household is established. Hence leading children to look for that father figure and affiliation outside from the wrong persons who prey on these children to use them to their advantage. This can be why most criminals come from single parent homes as they seek that attention that is falsely given until it is too late.
