Gustave was born with Bönickhausen as his official last name but his family adopted Eiffel instead as a reference to the Eifel mountains from their region. He is an engineer known throughout the world for his metal constructions (bridges, carpentry, stations, factories, towers...).
It was of the occasion of 1889 that the Eiffel tower was invented. The engineers had the idea of a big tower in June 1884, around 300 meters tall, a structure with a large pylon connected to  4 lattice girders and linked together. They started to set the foundation on the 28th of January 1887.
But they actually built the actual tower itself on the 1st of July 1887. The tower was mounted using wooden scaffolding and small cranes of foam.
It only took 5 months to build the foundation and 21 months to build the metal part of the tower. It took 2 500 000 rivets on the Eiffel tower, they finished the 31 march 1889. The plan was to build the highest tower in the world. Of all the plans submitted, the judges  chose GustaveEiffel. When the plan, along with its proposed site in the residential neighborhood of Champ de Mars was made public, the protest was immediate. Eminent artists, including Guy de Maupassant and Alexandre Dumas, signed an angry letter to the minister of public works. “We protest with all our strength the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is without doubt the dishonour of Paris. Everyone feels it, everyone says it, everyone is profoundly saddened by it.” As the tower progress, nervous neighbors feared that it would attract lightning, or topple onto their homes, and sued to stop construction. The city would take no responsibility, so Eiffel himself insured the neighbors, and work resumed. Parisians watched in awe & horror as it went up, calling it an “elephant”, a “giraffe”, a “hulking metal beast crouched on all fours”. After it finally opened, it became a huge hit, even with the protesting artists. All except de Maupassant.
