Imagine scuba diving in the ocean. You get into the cold, blue water and put on your gear. You start to swim further and further out to sea. You see colorful fish and green turtles that float so delicately and gracefully. That’s when you spot your favorite undersea animal. You get a little closer to have a better view. In your mind you think could this get any better, I mean, I’m with my favorite undersea animal! Would you want to do this for a living? Swimming in that big blue mysterious beautiful ocean. Well that's exactly what Sylvia Earle does for a living and she LOVES it.

Sylvia Earle's an American oceanographer and explorer. She is known for her research on marine algae, her books, documentaries and deepest walk on the seafloor, 1,250 ft! Sylvia also raises awareness about overfishing and pollution posed to the world’s oceans, has undertaken extraordinary expeditions, founded an organization called mission blue, and even has comparisons with an original explorer! But, while you take in all this information you think in the back of your head, why did Sylvia love the ocean so much, and what did she do after that? Well, her ocean loving (for starters) all started when she was just a tiny curious child…

Sylvia Earle was born on August 30, 1935 in Gibbstown, New Jersey. She lived on an old farm just outside of Paulsboro, New Jersey out in the countryside. She was three when she moved in with her mom, dad and her two brothers. She loved the outdoors ever since she was small. She never felt alone. There was so much to explore in Sylvia's backyard. She took notes of everything she saw like tadpoles and salamanders, spending time by the little pond in her backyard. Next to this pond, she also filled jars with fish, salamanders, insects, plants and even tadpoles, recording her observations in her notebook. When she was 13 she moved to Dunedin, Florida and her interest was focused on Gulf Coast wildlife. She then earned a scholarship around age 16 to Florida State University. Still at age 16, she attempted her first dive only using a diving helmet. There, at the university, she studied botany, a branch of biology that deals with the study of plants. She graduated at age 19! She also became certified as a SCUBA diver at this time, in order to study ocean plant life firsthand.
