Nathaniel Hawthorne changed his last name as a way to distance himself from a man he found vile.

On the other side of things, he was also related to some of the accused "witches". There were four accused "witches" in his family. Two of his great uncles married two daughters of Mary and Phillip English, who were both accused but not convicted of witchcraft. One of Nathaniel's cousins was married to the great-great-great grandson of John Proctor, the first man accused and convicted of witchcraft. It includes dark and grotesque scenes, discussing traumatic topics, and a strong belief that humans are not and will never be perfect. 

Consequently, much of the literature from Dark Romantics exhibits the worst of human behavior, often represented in the  analogous form of demons (drawn art) and hypothetical dialogue (written art/ literature).

The Pyncheon family owns the house of the seven gables. Colonel Pyncheon covets Maule's land and he is later hanged for witchcraft. The Colonel then hires Maule's son to build him a mansion which he is later found dead in. However, Colonel Pyncheon's deed for land in Maine is missing. The story then picks up with the maid of the mansion, Hepzibah and her brother Clifford. They are visited by a cousin of the Pyncheon family, Phoebe, and Judge Pyncheon. The only lodger of the house is named Holgrave, he shares with Phoebe the story of Alice Phyncheon and how Alice's father summoned the spirits of his father, grandfather and Colonel Pyncheon in hopes of finding out where the deed was. When everyone leaves, Judge Pyncheon returnes to the house to interrogate Clifford because he knows where the deed is.
