However keeping them on the correct path (when giving them the freedom to choose) can be difficult for it to be educational.

This last semester I tried my best and embrace a self-paced model of learning in my STEAM class at the middle school. I spent Christmas break making instructional videos for my coding lessons that I do through Tynker. Which I now know I need to adjust (most are TOO long and TOO indepth) I need to be more specific and more direct in my instruction! HOWEVER, these instrucitonal videos worked for the students that utilized them and we were able to get through more coding material than I have in past semesters. These self-paced coding lessons were done in class but mainly at home. In class we focused our time on project based learning that was also somewhat self-paced. If a student finished a project they could move on to the next project. I still have A LOT of adjustments to make but I loved what this enabled my students a myself to accomplish in a semester. I do worry about the management of this type of program when we are back to regular class sizes.

Passion projects are a fantastic way to get students active in their own learning. They can bring students together that have common interests and lead to increased engagement in school. The Genius Hour project is inspiring for students to get involved in school and the community in their own special way.
