Most people think of Google Slides as a one-way form of communication. There's information on a slide, someone shows the slide in a presentation, and talks about the content.

But presentations don't have to be one-way; by using links to jump around within a presentation, you can turn slides into interactive learning tools, like quizzes, scavenger hunts and "choose your own adventure" games.

For any presentation where the slides won't be shown in order, you have to plan out where your links will lead. In a game, the player may click on an image or some text to proceed; clicking in the wrong place may send them on a detour, or even back to the beginning.

You can use Google Slides to plan your game by using text boxes to represent the slides. Drag the text boxes around to change the order you want your slides to appear in.

Or you can go analog; use index cards to represent the slides, one card per slide. They can easily be moved around on a table to change the order, and you can add and remove "slides" as needed.

When you're giving a presentation, clicking anywhere on a slide takes you to the next slide. That's fine in a class or a meeting, but in an interactive presentation, you want the player to get different outcomes depending on where they click.

This is done with links. You can create a link on a text box or an image or an entire slide. It's not hard to do, but you do need to set up your slides correctly in order to make it work.

Watch this video for a guide to setting up links.

You will probably want to use images as well as text for linking in your game. The Internet makes it easy to find images of anything you can imagine; unfortunately, they usually have backgrounds that have to be removed before you can use them.

This video explains how to remove the backgrounds so you can use the images you find.
