But we cannot hear their thoughts, meaning we don’t know what they know about the lottery. It adds a sense of suspense because we would assume that a lottery is a good thing. But instead Tessie gets stoned to death. 

Characterization Of Tessie: She doesn’t think the lottery is fair but only because she was picked. She challenges this multiple times by saying that Mr. Summers didn’t allow for her husband to pick the correct slip. She goes unquestioned with her view on the lottery. She thinks it’s a good thing, but only when she is not picked. She thinks it’s bad when she is picked. After the exposition comes the rising action when Mr. Summers brings out the black box to start the lottery. The Climax is the moment Mr. Hutchonson picked the paper for his family that ended up having a dot on it. During the falling action Tessie Hutchonson pleads for her life to no prevail.
