Steelheart, by Brandon Sanderson, is set in futuristic "Newcago", or what was Chicago. Earth has become overrun by "epics" who have special powers that they received after "calamity" came. No one really knows how or why calamity came or even what it is. A big star appeared and within weeks, ordinary people started getting extraordinary, inexpiable powers. Most epics get corrupted by the powers they have and turn against humanity. And humanity gives up without a fight. The government is no longer run by elected officials but by powerful epics. The most powerful of epics, Steelheart, is in charge of "Newcago". This book is also told in first person , which becomes important in the climax as, only knowing what is happening from one persons point of view, adds to the experience, and, you never see the twist coming.

If you choose to read the book, or already have, they talk about whether or not overthrowing Steelheart would be best for Newcago. They think that, chaos will erupt with out the order of a strong ruler, or even if Steelheart is a bad ruler. After all, because of him, Newcago has the best infrastructure on the planet. That's why I think the theme is "overthrowing a bad ruler isn't always best."

This story reminds me of the current happenings in North Korea. One man comes in, makes everyone think he a god, then takes away all of their personal freedoms. People obey him out of fear, and again, the quote, "Join me or die!" seems more than fitting
