Cultural and Digital Literacies Resources for Learning by Marie Creste

"Education is, quite simply, peace-building by another name," said Kofi Annan, Former Secretary-General of the United Nations. Here are five resources to support global and cultural awareness and diversity in the elementary classroom. They use multimedia as a catalyst for civic engagement. They align with ISTE's Global Collaborator standard that students use digital tools in meaningful ways, to broaden their perspectives, and collaborate with others locally and globally. The DigCit competencies of ISTE prioritize inclusivity, with the goal of students using technology to engage with others with respect and empathy, and being open to multiple viewpoints. A primary goal in 21st century education is to develop learners who understand the world and their place in it. Students who take an active role in their community and work with others to make the world a more peaceful, sustainable and equitable place help fulfill ISTE's ambitious goals.

Learning for Justice

learningforjustice.org

Provides a range of free materials for educators: learning modules that make teachers and students think and question, presentations easily shared and hands-on workshops from education experts. These resources help teachers improve their practice and help K–12 leaders shape their schools into strong, equitable communities with a commitment to social justice.

Supports Social Studies and civics instruction. Teachers often find it challenging to teach young learners about the painful subjects of slavery and racism. L for J offers customizable lessons, unit plans, teacher guides, and videos from experts. In 4th grade, the curriculum teaches students about slavery and the Underground Railroad, and read the picturebook "Henry's Freedom Box", a true story of an enslaved man who mailed himself to freedom in the North. Learning for Justice has videos from historians and professors, including one investigating Henry Box Brown and tracking his ancestors to the present day, a great way to connect the present to the past.

A useful database offers recommendations for diverse titles for teachers, parents and students.

All children need to be surrounded by books in which they can see reflections of themselves – but also look through and see other worlds. Diverse books can erase bias and make all cultures universal; a good book can encourage self-worth and respect for other cultures. WNDB has grants up to $2000 for teachers who believe in the importance of incorporating diverse books by diverse authors in their schools and libraries. Funds can be used to purchase diverse titles, host diversity-focused student or community events, or any other project that supports diverse literature.

So*Just is a free resource from EdChange and the Equity Literacy Institute.

It provides a natural integration of technology in social studies education for analysis of historical questions and contemporary issues, appreciate cultural diversity, and experience events through the examination of primary sources. Primary sources representing multiple perspectives allow us to compare and make inferences about why there might be different accounts of the same event. A video of President Johnson's TV address to the nation explaining the need for the 1965 Voting Rights Act or audio/visual of Dr. King's many speeches during the Civil Rights movement provide valuable and authentic records of the past. Primary source documents help us to understand our past, present and future.
