Welcome to your first blog post.

You are going to write a post that evaluates how you used the style and form of Physical theatre to create a piece of drama symbolising the struggle of the creature when he is abandoned by Frankenstein. Use the model answer below to help you (I have also posted a definition of physical theatre separately.

CHALLENGE: Try to use alternative vocabulary to replace the word 'effective'.

Model Answer:

In my group we used the style and form of physical theatre to help set the scene and communicate how difficult it was for the creature abandoned in a scary city environment. We first stood in a line to create a wall that the creature was peering over and using to hide behind as he was scared. Then we transitioned into the shape of a train heading straight towards the creature. To make the physical movements even more powerful we used a sound scape of city noises like cars beeping and the rushing sound of the train. This emphasised how loud the city would be for the creature.

Our play was based on the creature adapting to the modern times and how difficult it was for the creature to see this world he was not used seeing his emotions in the play were mostly based on fear and confusion. We used many everyday objects and based our play in a public park. The creature kept running away as he felt the need to be alone. As he woke up he was not thought to walk or communicate. This shows us how hard is to be different or to adapt.

(sorry for making it really short)

We first used physical theatre to create a lampost, dog, and automatic doors we thought that the pets and new automatic things would be alien to the creature. We then transitioned into a superarket-again it was a new environment for the creature with automatic self serve tills. After that we transitioned into an airport with planes. Our group also used sound scape, this was emphatic as people would have an idea of how alarming it would be for the creature. What we could work on was the transitions between the scenes as they were not as smooth.

In our group, we created three different scenes using physical theatre. Our first one was outside a supermarket with a dog trying to chase the creature and the street lights surrounding the supermarket flashing in its face. This was presented using physical theatre. I think that the use of the street light and dog was powerful as the creature was only used to staying in a dark room alone. The second scene of ours was inside the supermarket with the self-service tills beeping and saying things like: would you like to scan your nectar card. This was created using soundscape and was a new experience for the creature. Our final scene was in an airport. We used physical theatre to create a scanner for people to walk through aswell as an aeroplane. Both of these fascinated the creature as it was not used to anything big or not on the ground.

Initially, we gave each othter roles:
Shanice- a Dog
Haneefa- a Human
Me- a Tree
Sharmin- a Building
Tahsin- a Building(with Sharmin)
Malek- a Vehicle
When Frankenstein came onto our scene, the human and the dog were scared of Frankenstein hence why the dog barked so much.We created physical theater by making the vehicle move around on the road as well as the tree. In order to make the physical theater even more powerful we added sound scape like:
Vehicles driving
Trees whistling
Fire engines/ Police/ Ambulance
This emphasized how loud the city would be for the creature.
Sound scape is sufficient as it enables the scene to become even more powerful.

wasIn my group we used the style of physical theatre and levels to show how the creature was feeling in a new world when he was abandoned by Dr. Frankestein. We used the idea of a zoo because in a zoo there are lots of different noises. To make the doors/gates to enter into the zoo we stood two people next two each other. As soon as the creature walked past the doors would open on their own. This is to show how technology has changed from push doors to sensor doors. As the doors open (Naadiyah and Khadijah) the creature walks in and is introduced to many new zoo object such as a lamp post for the night and ANIMALS. To show that we used physical theatre to make a lamp post we had Safa stand on her tip toes (levels) and keep her hands straight up in the air and open and close her hands to show the flickering of the lights.
Finally we had the animals. We had a gorilla (Sneha), a penguin (Drunjal) and finally a stingray (Ameenah). To make the sound of the animals we used soundscape. I was shouting as loud as I could to make the audience think that I was being a gorilla. Ameenah was make a zzzzzz noise for the stingray as it shows the effect that the stingray is stinging someone or something. Drunjal was make a quite pecking sound for the penguin as they are very quiet. As well as being different animals we had to think of how each animal would stand or even just move around. For this part we used levels. This is when I was down on my hands and feet to emphasise the fact that I
am a gorilla. Drunjal's hands were flapping and she was waddling to give the effect of a real Penguin walk. Ameenah was fullylaying on her belly and sliding around just like a real stingray. The feedback we got was to show more of the physical theatre in buildings rather than just in animals. Whereas we had a great use of soundscape.

In my group, we used physical theatre to make a tourist shop that Frankenstein would come across. Perhaps we could've used physical theatre much more successfully as the roles of two other people probably wasn't that effective. I think this because in a marketplace it isn't really an event you would come across, only fairly rarely (singing and dancing), and it may have even seemed out of place. Adding more on to the tourist shop, someone was inside it calling for people to come to their stall (which I believe is very common in marketplaces). I was meant to be a customer who would bump into Frankenstein but because of my lack of confidence I fear I may have said it too quietly or not confidently enough. If I successfully played my part of a fairly (verbally) aggressive passerbyer, Frankenstein should've been alarmed in a way-but I don't know if anyone heard me. If the two singing and dancing people were doing something else involving physical theatre maybe the piece could've been more constructive.

The scene showed how difficult it was to go through an airport which is confusing at first. Firstly we had the creature walk towards the counter where you give your luggage etc. To create that scene we had someone on their knees and hands to represent the counter and then we had someone else behind her with their hands out expecting to be given his tickets. Afterwards to use layers, we had somebody else pretend to be luggage, which was next to the metal detector. After the creature walked around it finally went through the metal detector which was difficult since the creature had may nuts and bolts in him. Of course the metal detector went off which scared the creature since he's new to all of his scents. We had some else with a stick that you wave in front of someones body which will then beeped or turned red when metal was recognized. He got terrified and started to run. This was his first interaction with modern day items (Electronics).

We used soundscape to make the setting slightly more naturalistic aura , for e.g we had one of us making whooshing sounds alongside swishing gestures with their hands to show that she was a tree.

Our group used the characteristic and technique of physical theatre by creating a still like image of what the creature would go through. We speculated the idea of setting the scene on a beach sidewalk and took this idea ahead by including markets and stalls on one side as well as street dancers on the opposite to confuse the creature of the noise around him. In addition to that, we used sound scape to bring the scene to life, e.g. people to make the rushing sound of footsteps everywhere and a stall cashier yelling for attention. To make this even more powerful we wanted to play along with the creature and make him actually feel like he is alive, so we tried to budge the creature a little as we had a customer at the stall who yelled at the creature for pushing him. This was adequate because the creature has never experienced a human talkimg to him.
