The different bases of segmentation and how these may apply to MCD.

Geographical

Geographic segmentation divides the market based on location such as countries, regions, cities, or neighbourhoods. McDonald’s applies this extensively by localising its menu, pricing, and promotions to suit regional tastes and cultural preferences.

For example, McDonald’s offers rice-based meals in Asia, halal-certified menus in Muslim-majority countries, and vegetarian options in India. This approach aligns with the lecture’s emphasis on tailoring products and marketing efforts to local needs

Geographic segmentation allows McDonald’s to remain relevant across diverse markets while maintaining a consistent global brand image.

Demographical

Groups consumers based on variables such as age, income, occupation, and family size. McDonald’s targets multiple demographic segments simultaneously.

Children are targeted through Happy Meals, toys, and colourful advertising, while students and young adults are attracted through affordable pricing, value meals, and extended operating hours. Working adults and families are targeted with convenience-focused offerings such as drive-thrus, delivery services, and family bundle meals.

Psychological

focuses on consumers’ lifestyles, values, attitudes, and personalities. McDonald’s appeals to consumers who value convenience, speed, and affordability, especially those with busy lifestyles.

At the same time, the brand increasingly targets health-conscious and socially aware consumers by introducing salads, lower-calorie meals, and sustainability initiatives. By aligning its offerings with consumer values and lifestyles, McDonald’s demonstrates how psychographic segmentation helps achieve a closer match between products and customer needs

Behavioural

Behavioural segmentation groups consumers based on usage rate, benefits sought, occasions, and brand loyalty. McDonald’s segments customers by usage patterns such as frequent diners, occasional buyers, and late-night customers.

The brand also targets customers based on occasions (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or festive promotions) and benefits sought (quick meals, affordability, or convenience). Loyalty programmes and mobile app rewards further strengthen repeat purchases. This supports the lecture’s explanation that behavioural segmentation enables firms to market products in a more focused and efficient manner

By combining these approaches, the company is able to serve diverse consumer groups while maximising efficiency and competitiveness. This demonstrates how the segmentation concepts discussed in the lecture can be applied successfully in a real-world global organisation
