Milton Obote became the prime minister of Uganda in 1962, when it first gained independence. In 1971, Obote's general, Idi Amin Dada, overthrew him and claimed power in a dictatorship. The Ugandan National Liberation Army fought back, capturing the capital, Kampala in 1979. Amin fled to Saudi Arabia, leaving Obote in power. Yoweri Museveni lead the National Resistance Army in war against Obote, and won. Museveni remains president, but has been accused multiple times of voting fraud. Currently, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), lead by Joseph Kony, is opposing Museveni's rule.

Yoweri Museveni, the current president of Uganda

While the whole country's rules are affected by the person in power, there have been many other effects. Many people have been executed, possibly wrongly, under both Amin's and Obote's rules. The LRA has caused its fair share of problems, too. They have killed over 100,000 people, and displaced at least 2,000,00.

Joseph Kony, leader of the LRA

As stated before, Uganda's history was often affected by Christian missionaries and Arab merchants. As a result, there is a large diversity in religion. Most of the population is Christian, most of those either Catholic or Protestant. About 14% of the population is Muslim. Despite this, many people also practice indigenous beliefs, including rituals for ancestors and gods, as well as witchcraft. As a result, many different leaders that could dislike others' rulings want to bring their beliefs to power.
