Being served by robots

Who needs a head and arms and face and jabbering from a robot? If you just want a mechanical slave, then utility is foremost. This designer serves his guests with a remote-controlled table. This simple robot server makes so much sense to those of us who just hate to interact with anything that has something to say, or might give us the stink-eye if the tip isn't big enough.

Implications - In a technology-dependent society, machines are growing increasingly capable and adopting human skills. These multi-capable machines are appealing to companies who can save money by employing them instead of human hands or drastically reduce the number of employees necessary to complete a given task.

Shipping Container Cafes

Designing with the environment in mind forces creativity, and the Müvbox is a great example of that.

The Müvbox is a storage container that was converted into a cafe. The Müvbox goes from entirely closed to unfolded restaurant in about a minute and a half. The design is a great space saver and earth-friendly approach to restaurant design.

Implications - The concept of the cafe is that it's supposed to be a modern reinvention of an old-fashioned canteen, which is pretty cool due to its retro influence. As for the food itself, the Müvbox offers a variety of dishes which includes lobster; so this definitely isn't your typical food stand. The inspiration and the food served at Müvbox will definitely have people lining up.

Japanese Restaurant with Goldfish Swimming in the Deep-Fryer

You have to see this video! This is a restaurant in Japan that has a goldfish tank - INSIDE THE DEEP FRYER! And the goldfishare actually alive and well, swimming around totally oblivious of the 162° C hot oil floating above them.

The reason why this is possible is that oil floats on water. The burning hot oil therefor floats on top of the water where the goldfish is. So as long as they don't try to "jump" out of the water, everything is fine. They can live inside an active, working deep-fryer for 5-10 years! The bonus is that all the crumbs and leftovers from whatever is being deep-fried sinks down to the goldfish. Just amazing!

“We have used aquarium technology to put diners face-to-face with the stunning underwater environment of the Maldivesâ€, says Carsten Schieck, General Manager of Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa. “Our guests always comment on being blown away by the colour, clarity, and beauty of the underwater world in the Maldives, so it seemed the perfect idea to build a restaurant where diners can experience fine cuisine and take time to enjoy the views â€" without ever getting their feet wet.â€ (Hospitality Net)

Korean Boeing 747 Takes Eating Out to New Heights

As a kid you have likely been to at least one themed restaurant, whether it was an old train car converted into a diner or some other contraption not originally intended as an eatery, but few among us can say we have sat in a Boeing 747 wedged in between downtown apartment buildings while asking what the soup of the day is. That’s right I’m talking about airplane diners, a craze in Asia, specifically Korea, that is still yet to hit here.

It is all the rage over there to walk into an abandoned jumbo jet, sit down in the hull that’s been converted into the dining area and eat fine cuisine while commenting how passers by look as small as ants. For the VIP experience, they’ve even converted the cockpit into a private dining area. I just hope they still have those delicious peanuts on board airplane diners.

Bedtaste Floating Restaurant in Germany

Bedtaste is the first floating bed restaurant in Germany, located at the Rhine promenade in Düsseldorf. It only opened a few days ago, but people are boarding already to take Bedtaste up on their promise to serve up a multi-sensual meal.

While chilling in your bed, a DJ plays electronic music as your ship cruises down the Rhine river. The ship itself is also quite unusual in that the Oceandiva Futura has an extraordinary exterior aesthetic that breaks away from the other ships that usually float the Rhine.
