Repetition, from my perspective, is the expression of the same idea multiple times that establishes symmetry throughout the piece. According to Ratcliff, repetition is a subtle "change moving against a constant," in which repetition requires slight changes to a nearly identical rhythm, timbre, instrumentation, or any other musical element, in order to successfully emphasize the purpose of the repetition (Ratcliff 14). Although I do agree that repetition promotes a physical response to music, and that repetition is essential in adding to the length of a piece, I feel like repetition should not consume the musical piece. Tasteful repetition, in my opinion, includes different musical sounds with a similar theme, in order to promote an underlying theme. Therefore, the various instruments require unique-yet-similar rhythms in order to not bore the audience while still using repetition to help them understand the piece. For example, Neutral Milk Hotels Oh Comely uses a simple and repetitive track in order to emphasize the lyrics-- and the subtle changes in the instrumentation expresses the changes in emotions amongst the musicians.
