"Demotivation breeds demotivation" sticks with me after reading this article. If we, as educators, aren't motivated to do what is best for our students and work hard to find ways to engage them, then they will never be motivated. It starts with us. If they aren't interested in what they are learning, then they won't buy in. I feel like a lot of this was information I have heard/read/practiced before. Something new to me was the idea of the Q&A checkpoints throughout the unit because they are anonymous and several students don't want to ask for help or share that they are struggling.

I commit to helping teachers find ways to engage their students when planning lessons together, that works for them and uses some of the strategies in this article.

Student engagement matters because it showcases motivation. It also confirms that students are learning. There are different forms of engagement and from a counselor standpoint I look at the emotional engagement. This refers to the affective attitude’s students have towards their school, classroom, peers, etc. It includes emotions such as boredom, happiness, sadness, anxiety, and a liking or disliking toward school. Walking around and doing check ins with students while in class is a productive way, I can commit to keeping students engaged.

When students are engaged, they are learning and are eager to show and share what they are learning. Learning continues because they continue to talk about the exciting things that they learned. By talking, they are continuing the teaching/learning cycle. I commit to keeping myself motivated to overcome the obstacles in the classroom. I plan to incorporate different activities that keep students using different parts of their brains for learning. I plan to keep students engaged by allowing them to see my commitment to always give them my best. I want them to know that I am excited to teach them and that I am also willing to learn from them! In my class, mistakes are welcome, and everyone is a teacher and a learner!

Student engagement is essential and necessary in the pre-k classroom. For many pre-k students this is their first formal school experience. Having go to engagement strategies helps students feel comfortable and excited to come to school and learn every day. I referred to a Bright Hub article titled Teaching Engagement in Preschool. For me, this article reinforced developmentally appropriate ways to motivate and engage our littlest learners. The article states the best ways to engage pre-k students is to establish routines, keep lessons short, employ visuals, hands on activities and use concrete materials. I commit to increasing engagement during story time by getting students active. I can have them repeat phrases or sounds, match pictures, and act out parts of the story.

Student engagement is like adding fuel to the fire. Teachers can bring the materials/lessons to "build the fire" but we need students to engage in order for the fire to burn. Without the students buying into the lesson and having a connection in some way, the lesson is flat. Sometimes lesson engagement come naturally due to the content or skill. Often times, the lesson needs to be "jazzed up" or enhanced to keep students from mentally checking out.

Student engagement matters because it allows the student ownership of their learning and helps them to make connections. As Library Media Specialist, I commit to keep students engaged in learning everyday. Emily Style introduced the term "windows and mirrors" when reading books. With 'windows,' students are viewing the book while experiencing someone else's life/culture that they may not be familiar with. With 'mirrors,' students are reading a book about a character that is of their same culture or experiences and helps to build their identity. Having books that balance both helps to make students more well-rounded while also building their self-esteem. -Hawkins

Student engagement is essential to giving students ownership and responsibility for their learning. We can force a student to be engaged simply by telling them to do so. It is our job as educators to help students find a passion for learning. Involving students' strengths and individuality is an incredible motivator. It also helps send the message to students that they are important and capable. We can build their confidence in so many ways beyond telling them "good job"!

When students are engaged, they will take ownership in their learning. Students will put forth more effort and leave each lesson feeling more confident in their ability to use the new skills. In order to keep all students engaged, we need to make sure that we plan lessons that address all types of learners. In my classroom, I give my students opportunities for gallery walks so that they can see other work and give constructive feedback. I try to take time to build necessary background knowledge so that they can be successful. The kids get real involved when we have some friendly competition practicing skills such as writing sight words. They cheer each other on and help out their classmates. All of the students want to work hard to do well when they know that their work and effort matters. I try to make each day meaningful by engaging my students in many ways. Amy K.

Student engagement is the key to learning. You can create all of the anchor charts and plan small groups but if the students are not engaged in their learning, they will not be nearly as successful. Students need to see our passion for learning and see how engaged we are in order for them to start to find their own passion.

Student engagement creates a better quality learning environment and helps to solidify learning. When students are engaged they are able to ask questions, respond and react to classmates ideas, and overall improve their understanding more effectively and efficiently than a teacher simply outputting information.
My commitment to keeping students engaged is to encourage even our young Kinders to explain their ideas, to have eye contact with their peers, and to react to their peers' ideas ("me too" hand sign, thumbs up/down, raise hand and add more, etc.). Although it is a challenge for them to maintain focus and be aware of each other in the learning environment. I will encourage these skills to reinforce the idea that our class is a team to help each other learn and grow.
