Beauty Standards

History: It started in ancient Greece, beauty was linked to physical perfection and proportion, as evident in the idealized forms portrayed in their art. Medieval and Renaissance Periods: During the Middle Ages, beauty standards were influenced by religious beliefs, and virtues like modesty and humility were considered beautiful. Some of the standards were having large hips, large breasts, and a rounder stomach because they believed that it showed fertility in women.

Defend: Beauty standards often lead to beauty privilege which is another form of discrimination. It affects many people, especially women that society shapes their opinions about their bodies and limit what is considered beautiful. The concept of it is the juxtaposition of humans' mindset that beauty is subjective but we are all affected by this idea that we're afraid of not looking perfect in front of another person.

Music: Prom Queen written by Beach Bunny focuses on the insecurities of her own body that she thought if she's prettier, will others like her more? And if she has blue-eyed and blond hair or a curl like Barbie will she get treated better, not just because she wants to be perfect but because those features fit today's beauty standards? The concept of beauty standards is rooted mostly from men as she wrote, "They say, beauty makes boys happy," demonstrating that it's just a way that men choose to look at women and devalue them by setting this high standard of beauty.

Depression

History: Considered the “Father of Medicine,” Hippocrates (460 – 370 BCE) was an ancient Greek physician who saw all bodily mechanisms as caused by the relative amount of four internal fluids, called humors: blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm. He believed that a balance between the four brought on good health, while an extreme deficiency or excess of one caused physical ailments.

Defend: Depression is one of the common things many people have struggled with. Although there’s many treatments to cure it but it still can affect major parts of our lives on a daily basis.

Music: Listen before I go written by Billie Eilish focuses on how can it feel when you have depression and nearly give up with her life and no medication can save her now. One word that is repeated a lot in this song is “Sorry,” which can explain that people with depression felt a lot of guilt and they can’t get out of it and they keep blaming themselves. That is a huge problem of living a life with mental health problems.

Poverty

History: Poverty has two earlier historic phases. During the first and longest period, most people lived off the land. In the second phase, big cities took shape, and these produced unprecedented inequalities and the problem of relative poverty as rich and poor people lived side by side.

Defend: Poverty is a huge part of society because it affects a lot in the economy. It also limits access to educational and employment opportunities. Moreover, they don’t get the same opportunity to welfare and healthcare as well. The more poverty is increased in the country means the more wealth thrives as well. It represents a huge inequality and imbalance.

Music: Living for the city written by Stevie Wonder presents a life of a boy who moved to New York City. The lyrics demonstrate his life with hard work but still get less access to all the accommodations as he wrote, “His father works some days for fourteen hours / And you can bet, he barely makes a dollar.” And another line where it mentioned clearly about opportunities and social issues is, “To find a job is like a haystack needle / Cause where he lives they don’t use colored people.”

Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities. Not only by laws but also morally by society itself. We need to ensure that we have equal access to wealth, health, well-being, privileges, and opportunity.

Responsibilities as a young person

As a young person, I will raise my awareness as much as i possibly can. When I get to have a conversation with anyone about social issues, having a good information to spread is very important. Another thing I’ll be engaged in is helping each other in a community. It can be small thing that will reflect a big circle in a future, for example, an alpha wolves 11 program. Standing up for yourself or someone who needs help is an important thing too because it can be considered as asking for equality for a right person as well.

Music as a vehicle for social change

Music is a very empowering way as a vehicle for social change. It conveys the message of the song to people so incredibly. When people hear music, not only they can receive power from it but also they can absorb the artists’ point of view. Therefore, a song with a good message and good music can encourage and empower people to raise their awareness and maintain doing good things.
