The Pavan is a slow and solemn dance characterized by dancers who typically avoid direct eye contact while moving in a deliberate manner together. You can see an example of the Pavan in this video: Pavan Dance Example.

On the other hand, the Galliard is a much livelier dance, almost resembling a jig. In the Galliard, male and female dancers engage in a playful and energetic dance, often involving jumping movements. Watch the Galliard in action in this video: Galliard Dance Example.

This piece features vivid word painting, employing descending scales with the words "descendings" and ascending scales with the words "ascending." It's a storytelling piece that narrates the goddess Vesta’s descent from the heavens.

Quartets exist today – the world famous Emerson String Quartet is an example of one in residence at Stony Brook!

In August 2021 the quartet announced its plan to disband at the end of the 2022–2023 season in order to focus on teaching and solo work. In the final season of concerts in 2022-23 the quartet will give farewell performances throughout North America and Europe. They are incredible and a must see if you have a chance!

Second movement is a “theme and variations.

Third movement is a scherzo movement – “scherzo” literally means “joke.” Fourth movement is an Allegro in sonata form.

Romantic melodies changed: Romantic melodic style is the most recognizable feature​. More emotional, effusive, and demonstrative than ever before​. Other features included: Wider range​, More sustained climaxes​, More irregular in rhythm and phrase structure​. Romantic composers explored chromaticism far more than earlier composers​. There was a new, liberal use of all twelve notes of the chromatic scale​.
