Self-sufficiency

Throughout the memoir, the theme of self-sufficiency is very prominent, it shows time and time again the kids provide for themselves because their parents are too selfish and lazy to do so. The Walls children are taught from a young age to be self-sufficient, even being appraised for being able to do things for themselves. An example of this is at the beginning of the book when three-year-old Jeannette is cooking hot dogs by herself, where she would later catch fire and gets taken to the hospital. At the hospital, the nurses question Jeannette about cooking the hot dogs, and Jeanette responds to the nurses by saying, "It was easy, I said. You just put the hot dogs in the water and boil them. It wasn't like there was some complicated recipe that you had to be old enough to follow." This shows that from that young age, Jeannette was self-sufficient and could provide for herself in some way. For this reason, I chose an image of a child cooking because it was one of Jeannette's earliest accounts of self-sufficiency.

Broken Promises

A theme that is reoccurring in the memoir is broken promises, it is a theme that often shows the promises the parents make for their children but never are brought to fruition. Rex repeatedly broke his promises to his children. An example of a broken promise is when Rex takes Jeannette and pimps her out to some older men when she is only thirteen! When they get back in the car, her dad asks her, "You upset about something, Mountain Goat?" Jeannette thinks to herself, "For a moment I considered not telling Dad. I was afraid there'd be bloodshed since he was always going on about how he'd kill anyone who laid a finger on me. Then I decided I wanted to see the guy get pummeled." She then tells him, "Dad that creep attacked me when we were upstairs."
"I'm sure he just pawned you some," Dad said as we pulled out of the parking lot. " I knew you could handle yourself." This shows the broken promise that her father made, saying that he would always protect her, and it's why I went with the image above. It shows how Jeannette felt because of the many times her father told her he'd protect her, and when she needs him the most, he disregarded the promise.

Disappointment

Disappointment is a theme that is common with the Walls family, this eventually leads to the kids not having the faith in their parents to provide or take proper care of them. There are plenty of times when the Walls' parents either don't protect their kids or provide for them, which leads to them feeling disappointed. A time when the children felt disappointed in their parents was when things started to get even tighter around the house, and the kids try thinking of solutions to help out. A solution that Jeannette provides is, "I guess we can eat less." to which Lori responds, "We have before." This shows that this wasn't the first time the family had these problems. It seems to them that no matter how hard they try to fix their parent's problems, Rex and Rose Mary create new ones to further disappoint them. This is why I chose a picture of an empty fridge. Throughout the memoir, the family is left disappointed without food and often eats odd things to get by.

Non-conformity

Non-conformity is a prevalent theme in the memoir, it can lead to the kids being used to a lifestyle that is not beneficial. It shows the family constantly breaking societal standards by the way they live and their philosophies. The Walls family has been known to pack up and move in the middle of the night, only to leave again. There was a time when Lori asks Jeannette, "Do you like always moving around?" Jeannette responds, "Of course I do! Don't you?" In congruence, Lori agrees. This shows that the life of non-conformity that was paved by the parents has become a normality and some sort of excitement boost for the kids. The picture I chose signifies the non-conformant lifestyle that the Walls family lives because they are constantly moving.

Manipulation

Manipulation is something that both the Walls parents have used against their children, this can lead to a child's mental health being diminished. There have been times when the kids brought up serious issues, and the parents instead of providing them comfort, tell them nothing wrong was done to them. A prime example of this is when Jeannette gets molested by her uncle and tells Rose Mary about it, she responds by saying, "Poor Stanley, he's so lonely." This is one of many times the kids have been manipulated, but this was one of the most appalling instances. The picture is like a metaphor for how the parents can mess with what the kids think to make them believe that everything is ok.

Selfishness

One theme that is common between Rex and Rose Mary is selfishness, Rex and Rose Mary constantly put their own needs and satisfactions over those of their children because they feel it's more important. There have been many times that the kids have been hungry with no food, yet the parents decide to use the money they have to buy other things rather than provide for their kids. An example of this is when Brian exposes his father's selfish needs by saying, "He spends more than he earns on booze." Jeannette responds by saying, " It's not all for booze. Most of it's for research on cyanide leaching." Brian tells Jeannette, "He doesn't need to research leaching." Brian adds, "He's an expert." Then Brian and Lori start to laugh. This is significant because the kids are even able to see through what their father is telling them, and they can see that he is selfish. I chose a picture of a man drinking alcohol because that is the one thing that Rex will do anything for. He constantly put his alcoholic wants before his children's needs.
