The archaeological records are not yet complete, but in 1976, a large campsite was discovered on a high cliff overlooking the North Saskatchewan River. It contained stone tools from the Middle Prehistoric period (3000 BC to 500 BC), which is likely to have been a regular gathering place for a semi-nomadic Aboriginal hunter-gatherer tribe.

Edmonton is located on the traditional territory of the Siksika First Nation (Blackfoot Confederacy), which includes the Tsuut'ina, Stony Nakoda, Cree, and Métis. This area is governed by the Treaty 6 signed in 1876. (See also Aboriginal people in Alberta; Aboriginal reserves in Alberta.)

Hundreds of years ago, long before Europeans set foot in the New World, tomatoes were growing wild in the western Andes Mountains of South America. The indigenous people cultivated them, and tomato seeds were brought from Mexico to Spain by those early explorers. From there, by the mid-1500s, this plant spread to Italy, where it began to be incorporated into local cuisine. In the following decades, tomato plants were planted throughout Europe, but mainly as ornamental plants.

The story of this tuber dates back over 10,000 years. According to some studies, it was first cultivated between 8000 and 5000 B.C. in the Puno region. Later, our ancestors in Peru, long before understood its full potential, recognized the potato as a true gift from nature. When the Spanish landed in Peru in 1532, several crops crossed the Atlantic in an event known as the “Columbian Exchange.” The potato was one of them. Some colonizers saw it as an exotic food and thought it had special qualities.

As the environment in Spain was very different from the Peruvian Andes, it took quite a while for the potato to thrive in Europe. However, in 1580, it arrived in Northern Ireland, where it found a more suitable environment to flourish.Farmers quickly saw that cultivating potatoes cost less, was easy to preserve, and generated more food. From Ireland, it spread to the British Isles and then moved east and north across Europe.

Industrial Pollution and Its Impact in Aamjiwnaang

The Impact of Petrochemical Manufacturing in Aamjiwnaang First Nation Reserve

This area, located in the southwestern part of Ontario, has long been influenced by the petrochemical manufacturing industry. It is densely packed with petrochemical plants and is known as "Chemical Valley".

The petrochemical industry here has brought about serious pollution problems. For example, data shows that the benzene pollution level in the northern part of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation Reserve has reached 44 times the safety standard. This kind of pollution has a significant impact on the health of the local First Nation people. Since the 1990s, there has been a decline in the proportion of male births in the community. And the incidence of diseases such as asthma among local children is three times the national average in Canada.

Moreover, the local environment has also been severely damaged. There are issues like oil spills in rivers and the release of harmful gases into the air. Despite the local First Nation people's long - term efforts and struggles, it has been a challenge to obtain relevant pollution data and effective environmental governance. The government's slow response and insufficient supervision have made the situation more serious(Cryderman, D., Letourneau, L., Miller, F., & Basu, N. (2016). An ecological and human biomonitoring investigation of mercury contamination at the Aamjiwnaang First Nation. EcoHealth, 13(4), 784–795. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10393-016-1162-4)
