Technology Concern in ELA by Brittani Davis

I think that technology overall improves the way we teach. It allows for easier communication, access to more materials, etc.. However, I am a bookworm. I have a love for books. I think the hard copy of a book reads differently than the virtual copy. I am concerned that the rise in online English classes, and use of ebooks specifically, will take away a huge part of what makes students fall in love with literature: books.

My question is: Do you think that ebooks take away from the overall reading experience?

I will be the first to say that I have read my fair share of ebooks, however I do think it's a different experience to read an ebook than the hard copy. Some of you may think I'm silly for this, but I worry that the younger generations of students won't appreciate books the same way I (and many others) do. I know that there are many "pros" to ebooks. I love and appreciate that there is a read-aloud feature, that they save space, use less materials to create, etc.. I do see all of the many benefits. I just question if this will change the students' whole experience of reading and falling in love with literature.

There is nothing like having a book in hand, and I think books should always be available for students to have. E-books have their advantages and I don't necessarily think they take away from the reading experience, it just may not be for everyone. You can still benefit from an e-book like a regular book. My nieces and nephews like using their tablets, and all things technology, but they still enjoy to have an actual book to read at night.

I personally love actual paper books. I could write a paragraph on the way books smell, but that would be a lot of effort that is not necessary. For me, a good book is worth having to flip through and re-read and hold.

On the other hand, I don't think an e-book diminishes the effect of the story inside the book. I actually prefer e-books for textbooks because they save my back and they are easier to navigate. My nephews are the same as Hannah's, and they love to read on their tablets.

E-books are cheaper, easily assessable, and probably the wave of the future, but there is still something so special about actual, bound, books.

I agree that there is a big difference between a virtual book and an actual hard copy. I personally have a difficult time with ebooks because my eyes get tired far more quickly. However, when it comes to textbooks, the resources that come along with a virtual copy of the book can not be beat. The advent of making a textbook fully searchable, for example, is fairly revolutionary, especially for students who have a difficult time making their textbooks useful.

I agree with what you are saying. Personally when reading things online it is harder to stay focused in what I am trying to read. When I read from a hardcover book, I enjoy what it has to bring more. I think students should experience a real book than a technology book.

I, personally, LOVE having a book in my hand. I love seeing how far I am into the book, and how close I am to the end. People use technology a lot throughout the day. I believe that students need a break from technology.

Personally I think they do not take away from the reading experience for some, but yes sometimes it does. I am not someone to openly go pick up a book, but when I am able to download one on my phone in a time of boredom it definitely gives me the same experience, but for someone who loves to read and be able to turn the pages, and have that actual book feel, it probably does take away from the experience.
