-The enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863 capped two years of increasing support for emancipation in New York City.

- Republicans tried to keep abolitionists from taking the lead in New York's antislavery politics during the early years of the war.

- In March 1863, a lot of things were stirred because of the form of a stricter federal draft law.

-On Saturday, July 11, 1863, the first lottery of the conscription law had taken placed and because of this for twenty-four hours the city remained quiet.

  • Stemmed from the introduction/creation of the Emancipation Proclamation brought by Abraham Lincolin, which emancipated slaves. This was a message that meant the war was being fought on behalf of black freedom and equality.

    • In March 1863, a draft was initiated. All male citizens between twenty and thirty-five and all unmarried men between thirty-five and forty-five years of age were subject to military duty. Unless however, you paid a certain sum to avoid the draft.

    • The rich were able to afford the exemption fine, while the disenfranchised and poor white men(in New York City were often Irish), were forced to enlist because they were frequently the sole source of income for their families.

    • The anti-black violence was driven by the resentment that the Irish would have to compete with “freedpeople” for jobs in the city now that the Union had embraced emancipation. These people believed African Americans were somehow gaining superiority/leverage over the white man. 

    • Once the riots began, rioters' mainly targeted only military and governmental buildings. Others attacked only those individuals who interfered with them. However, as the riot progressed, some of the rioters had turned to attacks on black people, and on things symbolic of black political, economic, and social power.

They were mainly Irish and German men as many of them immigrated to the US due to the Potato famine in the 1840s. African Americans weren't considered citizens, so therefore were not part of the draft

    - African Americans along with white families who protected them and abolitionists became the main targets of the Riot
    - Colored Orphan Asylum

     - During this time forty percent of all goods were all from cotton; all goods were exported and transported to city ports(New York Draft Begins).
    - Slavery was still promoted in the cities, and that brought out a conflict between the working class and the wealthy(New York Draft Begins).
    - Which brought a war among
    the people in New York City.

They didn't want their careers to be taken away from them ("New York City Divided Pre Civil War " Paragraph 5  ).
    -      Then Abraham Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, which made many workers upset and ended up leading the workers to protest on how they should not lose their jobs due to the formerly enslaved people("New York City Divided Pre Civil War " Paragraph 6 and 7).
    -      This had led to the decision of Abraham Lincoln for the workers, soldiers, and officers and stated that he would not abolish slavery.

The lower class white men set fire to buildings that symbolized peace for Black people
    - ties in with American Caste System, white people in the lower caste were forced to go to war while the higher class could pay out of it. 
    - Also showed the lower class resentment of freed Black people due to job competition in the city. Lower class white workers felt threatened by Black people who were gaining more power. 
    - Divide between black people and white people. When trying to rebuild the orphanage, they had to relocate as neighboring property owners wanted them to leave. Many black families also left the city, and the ones who stayed found support in recovering from the destruction of the riots such as the "Union League Club" and the "Committee of Merchants for the Relief of Colored People" (Harris)
