I used SLANT after it was shared after an observation. I liked it, but kinda got stuck on how it similar to a racial slur... STAR is easier on the ears. I also like star, because it adds the "Why" to the words in SLANT. I can see how having a description for each letter with a poster in the classroom can help make it a habit to follow. If you have students add examples of what each S, T, A, and R look like, feel like, etc. in the classroom, it can provide more ownership and meaning to students. - Chris

STAR is a simple acronym to consistently make sure students have a respectful routine when listening to classmates and teachers. It's true, we have to be engaged in our work to form deeper learning. The idea that everyone needs to feel as if they belong is so important in a classroom setting. My one question: How do we reach students with ADHD and help them follow these routines consistently without constant reminders?

I also begin the year with body language, sitting up, facing the speaker, whole body listening. We talk about how studies show our brains actually absorb an hear better as well as it lets the speaker feel like you care. I like the idea of using the tracking phrase often so it becomes automatic! All students need to know how much they are cared for be their teachers and peers. I like the cold calls and do those often.
