Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya

I believe I enjoyed this piece the most for several reasons: one of them being how endearing the protagonist was. Anaya was able to create a character of a young boy, Antonio, who is extremely sweet and innocent, while not overdoing it to the point where he seems fictitious. As a student of Spanish, another aspect I enjoyed was encountering new phrases and sayings that I otherwise would not have picked up in class. While reading, I was intrigued by the differences between his Hispanic-Catholic upbringing and my White-Protestant one. Something else I found interesting was that–while I thought most of it seemed to be true to life events–the author would very casually slip in mystical aspects that threw me off-guard with how realistically they fit into the story. I found myself almost believing in the Golden Carp just as Antonio had.
