It promoted the concept that Jesus Christ was made by God and not entirely equal to him, based on the beliefs of a scholar named Arius. While the mainstream Christian churches regarded Arianism a heretic, it had numerous adherents, including two Roman emperors. More crucially, several Germanic tribes adopted the Arian version of Christianity, notably the Ostrogoths, who governed sections of Italy, the Visigoths, who ruled the Iberian Peninsula, and the Vandals, who ruled what is now Tunisia.

During the ninth century, both the Papacy and the Byzantine church tried to convert the Bulgarian peoples to their own faiths. Boris I (852–889), Bulgaria's monarch, utilized the situation to court both side, seeking for the best decision for his own strategic purposes. Eventually, he was able to reach an agreement with the Byzantine Empire that allowed for the establishment of a national Bulgarian church that was only lightly supervised by the Archbishop of Constantinople. Even the Bulgarian language would be used for the church's official liturgy.

After the Magyars invaded and controlled the Carpathian Basin towards the end of the 9th century, efforts to convert them were attempted, with limited success. During the reign of King Stephen I (1000 or 1001–1038), the monarchs took significant steps to promote Christianity and eliminate their pagan faith.

The Baltic peoples were Europe's last major holdouts to Christianity, and crusades were launched to force them to convert from the 12th to the 14th century. The Teutonic Order was able to carve out a state in sections of the Baltic area, but the Grand Duchy of Lithuania remained unconquered and grew into a regional power. Grand Duke Jogaila (1377-1434) was not baptized a Roman Catholic Christian until he married the Polish Queen Jadwiga in 1386 (becoming Wadysaw II Jagieo). A year later, he baptized the Lithuanians, while remnants of the pagan faith persisted throughout the Middle Ages.
