I feel very privileged to work with such wonderful people - so many ideas about our cultures, traditions and customs that it would be easy to plan at least 20 projects already! Cultural heritage is like Pandora's box overwhelming with overflowing abundance of diversity being a great resource for international school work. So let's dive in!

What have I learned today?

The effect of using the nature as a class-room. It really felt wonderful to be on the beach and at the same time it was easy to concentrate when we were sitting there. Unfortunately it is hard to have lessons outdoors in Sweden due to the weather. But I usually let my students use the environment as a inspiration, for example go out and take a picture of something that reminds you of a feeling.

The different ways you can view on culture. We gave many examples of changes in culture and it is interesting how culture could change while we are both looking backwards and forward.

And that the culture, like trees everywhere in the world, have roots

SILVIA

DAY 1

I’ve learnt many lessons today; one of the most precious things is how important our cultural background is in shaping the way we see the world around. Different cultures enable people to see reality differently; lack of culture impoverish our vision.

I’ve learnt a lot from you all; what struck me the most was the importance of culture to unite people, making them realise how connected we are to each other, part of one community. Family traditions and national traditions play a vital role in making us feel accepted and close to each other.

Every man in every place has his own customs and traditions. We can talk about the same things but experience it differently in different parts of the world. But there is one thing that is common to all. Among many traditions, the first to thing of is a tradition closely related to family, such us the habits we inherited from our parents or grandparents, or the way we celebrate important moments like Christmas. Food has in addition to family, he plays an important role when talking about tradition.. On a beautiful sunny day, we experienced the intercultural tradition of "Christmas" on the beach.

Today we had a perfect introduction into the meaning of cultural heritage. We learned, that we must distinguish between tangible, intangible and natural heritage and where the difference is. So, we got an idea of, why Guadeloupe is the perfect place to be, to get a real impression, what this means concretely. A place where you can feel and experience this influence on culture in many ways, like language, music and clothes for example.

In the following discussion everyone thought about his or her own cultural heritage and we recognized, that in every country food is very important for the cultural heritage as well as important days during the year, like Christmas or Easter and that each country and even every family has it’s own traditions for that days. This tangible heritage we experienced our self, afterwards in an impressing international lunch, where for everyone brought food from his or her home country.

We learned, that cultural heritage is contemporary and moving and that customs become traditions if they are adopted. But we must ask ourselves, how much can be mixed without anything get lost.

And we also talked about, what happens if this heritage gets lost and about our responsibility and chance as a teacher to keep it, because of our influence on many people.

Getting to know your nation's heritage and the heritage of other nations is an important way to appreciating your identity. If a person doesn't know one's history of family or a country, one doesn't appreciate how much effort was put into things that are now self-evident to us. The past represents your roots and it makes you who you are. Therefore you should not just think of your past but put your effort in present so you will look at it as your own past.

It is not just about how to pass the heritage to the next generation but also how to adopt it to the modern times. And there is a question – do social media, the internet, globalization, tourism work for the benefit of cultural heritage?

Our discusion is a proof that you can find out what is valuable through the dialogue. Thank you all for a fulfilling day.
