Imperialism is when a country takes control of a another country or land economically, socially, and politically; often against those people's wills and by military force. The U.S. began its imperialism in the late 1800's and ended in the mid 1900's. The U.S. had imperialism because imperialism grows a country's global power socially and economically.

The ship was at Cuba because Spain had just invaded it, and the U.S. felt like Spain could easily attack America since Cuba is just 90 miles away from Florida. When the ship blew up we thought that Spain had done it, so we wanted to take control of Cuba so they couldn't be near us. (For more detail read Yellow Journalism)

One reason the U.S. gave for going to war in Cuba was because of the Spanish reconcentration camps. Spain would put the Cuban people into camps and force them to work with little amounts of food and water so many people died. A U.S. general, Fitzhugh Lee, said that, "the number of deaths among the reconcentrados has amounted to 77 per cent". America said that they should go to war with Spain so they can help the Cubans get away from the reconcentration camps.

Their goal was to spread Christianity to the Natives, and it worked quite well because the people accepted it, and about a third of the people converted. The missionaries themselves were not thinking about imperialism but after time they had children and grandchildren and they are the ones who started businesses to make money. They soon because very prosperous business men, but the wanted to make more money by getting rid of the tariffs. (See Make Money on Resources), so they got the idea for imperialism of the Hawaiian Islands.

Yellow Journalism is when papers print stories that aren't true because they are more exciting and more people will want to buy their paper instead of reading one with boring stories that are actually true. When the USS Maine blew up Yellow Journalism instantly said that, "NAVAL OFFICERS THINK THE MAINE WAS DESTROYED BY A SPANISH MINE", even though they had no evidence to back this up. The story caught on because it was exciting so many Americans got scared that they were being attacked which made the U.S. start a war with Spain so they wouldn't feel threatened. After closer examination we realized that Spain didn't blow up our ship, but we still wanted to go to war so they couldn't do anything, even though they had no intention of doing anything.

One reason the U.S. wanted to take control of foreign lands is because of the different resources and the different things that grow in those countries. For example; Cuba was a great place for producing coffee and Hawaii produced sugar. The American sugar farmers in America would sell their sugar to the U.S. but eventually the U.S. put a tariff on their sugar because it was grown in a foreign land. This allowed for sugar grown in the U.S. to be the cheapest, so no one would buy the more expensive Hawaiin sugar. The sugar farmers wanted Hawaii to be annexed so they wouldn't have the tariff so they could make more money off of their sugar.

Because the U.S. wouldn't leave Cuba until they added the Platt Amendment to its constitution they were forced to add it in.
