Their goal was to spread Christianity to the Natives, and it worked quite well because the people accepted it, and about a third of the people converted. The missionaries themselves were not thinking about imperialism but after time they had children and grandchildren and they are the ones who started businesses to make money. They soon because very prosperous business men, but the wanted to make more money by getting rid of the tariffs. The story caught on because it was exciting so many Americans got scared that they were being attacked which made the U.S. start a war with Spain so they wouldn't feel threatened. For example; Cuba was a great place for producing coffee and Hawaii produced sugar. The American sugar farmers in America would sell their sugar to the U.S. but eventually the U.S. put a tariff on their sugar because it was grown in a foreign land. This allowed for sugar grown in the U.S. to be the cheapest, so no one would buy the more expensive Hawaiin sugar.
