The article really makes one dive deeper into assessments and makes me think that even just the simplest assessment to gauge the room on how people grasped the topic is extremely important. It does not necessarily matter if everyone 100% got it but being able to gauge their understanding is crucial.

I have lots of thoughts on this quote, but some things stick out to me more than others. I like how it says a formative assessment would consist in a "perfect world". Like formative assessments, everything has to be planned out and well thought out. A perfect world wouldn't consist of unplanned and on-the-fly situations. The way they describe formative assessments makes it not seem as terrible as it is sought out to be. Coming from a generation where assessment means "test", it is refreshing and exciting to see that assessment can be viewed in a different and more positive light! I really like the idea of formative assessment being an ongoing loop of learning and revision. It seems like an excellent way to gauge where the students understanding lies, and what we can do as teachers to help bridge any gaps. I work with students who have social and emotional disorders and can see how this can greatly benefit them by building confidence and minimizing stress or anxiety when it comes to learning checks.

I like how this quote truly makes you think of an assessment in a different way. Most of the time when kids hear the word assessment or test. They always get nervous, or stressed out. This way it allows students to spend more time learning the content, and not being stressed out over how well they are going to do on the assessment. As a student who really struggles with test anxiety and not doing the greatest this quote really makes me look at an assessment in a different way. This allows students to not get stressed out about taking a "quiz" and just trying their best to see where we need to improve. The way it is described as a loop really stuck out to me. I like the learning, seeing what my students know and reviewing the feedback, and learning again. I think this will allow you to not have one or two students left behind. The class as a whole will be on the same page and can continue learning knowing that everyone is where they need to be.

In my opinion this quote summarizes what education should look like in its most pure form. When teachers are teaching with the goal of student learning and understanding only then I think it is easily feasible for all assessments to look like this constant loop. However, when teachers are expected to show benchmarks and students are expected to take exams that compare them to others this is sadly not able to be a possibility. I think the wording "perfect world" is so key in this quote as the writer recognizes that this is not something attainable to all classrooms with the current state of education.

I think this quote does a brilliant job exhibiting a definition of the word "assessment" that many don't see often. Usually, the word "assessment" is seen with a negative connotation, as was exemplified through the word cloud made of student responses on the slideshow. Growing up in school, assessments always meant tests and harsh grading, but this class and quote have opened my mind to make me realize that as a future teacher, I should use assessments as a tool for growth, not limitation. I feel as though a lot of students think that tests and assessments limit them, when instead, assessments should be more complex than just a grade in the grade book.

Something that I have encountered since I have been in college is this concept of how assessment works. Before now, assessments were all letter-grade based. This focus on the depth and quality of learning is something I have had to adjust to since I got to college. Professors are more concerned with whether or not you are improving and learning the correct skills rather than how that looks on a transcript. i think this quote would be beneficial for teachers to base their assessments around the idea of improving instead of finalizing something a student may not have fully grasped by that time. From Elementary to High School, when I was given an assessment I would always be so worried about what grade I was going to get. When it came to studying all I did was memorize the content over and over and as soon as the assessment was over it would leave my mind. Looking back I wish all of my assessments would have been formative, as a student I think it would have gave me the chance to get a better understanding of what I was learning. As future educators we want all of our students like the quote says to grow, learn and understand, so giving our students formative assessments would give them that opportunity.
