Script Monty BBC INTRO Nayan: Hello and welcome back to the BBC news channel, I’m Nayan Grant and today we will be talking about the 2006 Java tsunami! This was a devastating tsunami that took place in Java near Indonesia. As you know Indonesia is highly populated which did not help when the tsunami came in. Being highly populated was really bad because Java is very poor and do not have many hospitals to help the injured. Also as a result of being poor most of their structures weren't very well built and got knocked down very easily. They also didn't have many cars so getting away quickly was a lot harder. Java wasn't very well prepared most country's near tectonic plates have escape routes, These escape routes help people clear out the coast quickly and efficiently. But Java didn't have any so it was a lot harder to get out of the way of the massive tsunami. The tsuami happened on July the 17th at 3.19.27 pm. This Tsunami surprised everyone because Java and Indonesia are both LEDC's and did not have radars to tell when a tsunami was coming in. If they had had a warning system it would have saved lives because then it would have given people time to run to high ground. It would have also told the rescue workers to get ready and prepare. This tsunami was caused by a massive earthquake that registered 6.2 Richter scale. However Java did have help Britain was willing to give financial aid and rescue expertise. And now we are going to hand over to our professional scientist Monty who is at his lab. Monty: The earthquake that caused this tsunami happened because the Indo-Australian plate was forced under the Eurasian plate causeing friction. this friction caused energy that kept on building up and up and up. Eventually the two plates jolted free of each other Creating a massive shock wave. that shock wave made the ground shake violently. This earthquake displaced the water creating a massive wave that because they didn't have a warning system they did not even notice the tsunami till it hit land. And now back to the reporter. Rhys: I was home playing Roblox and my Wi-Fi crashed that's when I heard a rushing noise, I immediately got up and started running to high ground, luckily I got there just in time but I can't erase the dead bodies from my memory. After the tsunami all of the community tried to help out as much as they could. I helped clearing the debris with most other people, all of the doctors and nurses were required to help the sick.
