He seems very knowledgeable about what he does.

Summary

Moby Dick starts out as a book of a man who was a merchant sailor named Ishmael who wants to sail the seas and go whale hunting. As he is walking around a cold city on a winter night looking for a place to stay he found a hotel called the Spouter Inn, which seemed fitting. They didn't have a room but offered him to share the Harpooners blanket, which is how he met Queequeg. At first Queequeg wasn't very pleasant until the next morning. Ishmael found out Queequeg wants to go on a ship to whale hunt, so they became partners. They then went to Nantucket to find a ship to sail on. They then found the Pequod and climbed aboard. The captain, who is Captain Ahab, was nowhere to be found until the day after they left shore. Captain Ahab appeared in front of all shipmates, and from that point on he was only focused on killing the white headed whale, the whale that took his leg off, Moby Dick. All eyes are peeled for any whale, and they ended up spotting one but it wasn't Moby Dick, just a normal whale. As they kept sailing, Queequeg who was one of the best harpooners got sick. Queequeg then thought he was about to die and was telling about how he would like to be buried. As the voyage went on, Queequeg got well again. Many gams or talking to other ships passing by. Nobody has seen Moby Dick and most don't even believe he is real. Ahab was getting angry, frustrated, couldn't take it anymore, and Starbuck almost convinced him to go home, to see their families, but then, the big white headed monster came around, and what happens after that cannot be told.

As another ship approaches the Pequod in a gam, they ask for help to find a lost ship, and Ahab refuses to help in the selfishness of finding Moby Dick. The beginning of this started as Gardiner saying: "I need your help. We are whaling with another vessel, but our boats got separated" "My boy is on that ship. For God's sake, I beg you, help me find him." (Melville 68) and even after this Gardiner offered to pay them to help but Ahab simply refused by saying "Captain Gardiner, I will not do it." "Even now I am losing time. Goodbye. God bless you and may I forgive myself, but I must go." (Melville 70) Gardiner was simply disappointed and responded with "You may forgive yourself, Ahab......." ".....but I will not! And god will not!" (Melville 70) And in my eyes, this meeting plays a role in the end of the story with gods will. Ahab's selfishness does not work out.

They have finally spotted the White-Headed monster, Moby Dick. It was all hands on deck to go and kill the nasty beast, to retrieve Ahab's vengeance on the beast. But do you remember when Captain Gardiner said that God would never forgive Ahab for leaving Gardiner behind and not helping? Maybe this was gods vengeance on him. Ahab threw the Harpoon and it struck Moby Dick. but...... "The harpoon was darted and teh whale flew forward. The line ran with such velocity. Ahab stooped to clear it..." "...and he did clear it. But the flying turn caught him around the neck and, voicelessly, he was dragged out of the boat." (Melville 83)
This picture shows Ahab being taken by Moby.

Character Change

The characters I thought stayed the same throughout the story, as their personalities were key to making the story. Captain Ahab was a mean, stubborn old man who had eyes on Moby Dick since he set foot on the Pequod, he did become more and more mean and demanding throughout the story. Starbuck also stays pretty consistent as he tends to Ahab's needs, and whenever he suggests anything Ahab almost always shoots him down, but he stayed very persistent through the story. Next, Ishmael was pretty much just the narrator throughout the story. He didn't do much other then get him and Queequeg on the on the boat and observe everything that happened. Queequeg was the only person that maybe changed a little bit. In the beginning of their voyage he showed his courage by jumping off the boat and saving someone, but then as their main voyage went on, through the cold air, he got very sick and thought he was going to die. That is when he lost his courage, but then he pulled through and made it. After he got better he regained his courage and skills. This canoe represents what Queequeg wanted to be buried in if he did. He didn't want to just be wrapped up in a sheet and thrown into the drink. He didn't want to be forgotten about.

The whole story was about vengeance but when Moby Dick won for the second time, the whole trip was worthless.
