An outdoor play area is needed so infants are in more than just one room a day. If it is a young infant they will need a shaded, grassy, and protect place to lay on a blanket of some sort. For infants that are crawling making sure the area is safe and doesn't hurt their knees is important (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015).

There must be an area to change the infants diapers. "The diapering area needs counters or tables to change diapers. Diapering counters usually have children lying sideways to the adult" (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015, p. 269). The supplies that are needed to change the child should be around arms distance of the counter. Some of the essentials at this area include, diapers, cleaning products and a disposal spot for the soiled diapers. There also has to be a sink near by and not near the feeding area (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015).

There should be a place for arrivals and departures to happen. Arriving and leaving for a child can be tough so having a designated spot can help then to adapt and learn a routine. Also, "Near this area should be storage for children's belongings" (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015, p. 265). This gives a place to put things like jackets, boots, snow things, or any other belongings of the child.

Infants start with only drinking liquids to eventually eating solids. In an infant classroom some may begin with solids earlier than other children. Some mothers may want to come in and breastfeed their children so, "Such a simple device as a comfortable chair in a quite, private corner for mothers to nurse gives a supportive message" (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015, p. 261). A rocking chair may be used to feed infants a bottle, whether it be breast milk or formula. For infants eating some solids a table may be used to feed the children.

A small kitchen area is needed for an infant classroom. There should be a refrigerator available for food or maybe breast milk and something that can be used to warm foods. "A dishwasher is handy. Tools and utensils for food preparation are needed...in addition to bottles and nipples (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015, p. 269). This area should have all the essentials for feeding the infants.

In the indoor environment infants need a balance between soft and hard surfaces. They need, "Soft blankets, stuffed animals, cozy furniture, mattresses, pads, cushions, and laps" (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015, p . 277). Infants also need hard surfaces. surfaces like wood floors can provide the the resistance needed for good posture. Also, they provide a different feel to crawlers or new walkers.

Making sure everything in the play area is age appropriate is key to the environment. Very young infants don't need much in their environment, but as they grow will begin to need simple toys. The best object in this space is a human face. Simple objects can be used such as a scarf or other light objects that they can grasp, drop, mouth, poke and bang. As the infants get older the number of toys may increase, but stay simple (Gonzalez-Mena & Eyer, 2015).
