MS Instructional Ideas by Andrew Finley

Hi Middle School Teachers, I wanted to create a space where we could all share ideas, tips, and tricks on how we're all adapting our teaching to best meet the needs of our in-person and virtual students. I'd love to hear what all of you are doing in your rooms so we can continue learning from each other!

(Most of the Time) Not Using Airpods

Since I have a loud "teacher voice", I've found that I often don't need my airpods when teaching. Not using them also has allowed me to call on my Zoom students, and the entire class can hear their answers.

I've found that I can share a video with both my in-person students and Zoom students without my in-person students having to get on Zoom! If you use your projector volume for your in-person students and select "share computer sound" for your Zoom students, both will be able to hear any video you play from your computer without bad audio feedback! Yay!

I pull up my ZOOM kids on the screen, along with an iPEVO view of my classroom, and have the ZOOM kids voices come through my projector, so both in-person and ZOOM kids can discuss and answer questions as a whole class.
I have NOT figured out how to do good cooperative learning discussions with both groups, however.

That is it. I keep forgetting to remember and Andrew suggested putting a note in front of me to remind me to join. I have three of my six classes with Zoom kids and one kid rarely shows, so it is hard to remember. The note helps. I am still having a hard time with it because my kids keep changing remote status and I would love more ideas. The note is a good one.

If you're like me and put all of your students into one Google Classroom, make a paper copy of your class rosters that fits on one page, laminate it (or put it in a plastic sleeve), and use a whiteboard marker to write assignment scores on it. That way, you've got all of the scores separated by class when you go to update grades in myHP. :-) See me if you need help! -Kindred
