In relation to our class: In "Prison," Yilan symbolically preserves the life of her outstanding daughter by desperately trying to have more children with her husband in order to maintain happiness and find closure.

In the picture, two hands are displayed as a means of figuratively representing the things that we appreciate and hope to maintain compared to the things that are beneficial to mankind in numerous aspects. One hand reveals trees, mountains and wildlife, while the other reveals innovative architecture and urban development. These two hands represent two options that we have, and how we must choose according to what satisfies us or what satisfies society as a whole

The poem and the drawing relate to the theme because they both concern the idea of making decisions that are beneficial to oneself. I chose to compare the poem to the illustration because they both exhibit the way in which the natural world is diminishing, and strongly oppose the reality in which people will have to adapt to materialistic lifestyles rather than lives of natural beauty and leisure. The poem regards the speaker's desire to continue his life of leisure in nature, and presents no alternative for the speaker's source of joy. The illustration displays a hand with city buildings and urban structures that leads nowhere besides a bright red abyss, and a second hand that displays natural trees and rocks and waterfalls. This hand leads to a white background with roots. The color white and the roots symbolize purity and growth, while the color red symbolizes evil. I find it interesting that Ghosh and Davies have similar outlooks on the preservation of nature, and relate satisfaction to priceless objects in nature.
