Factors that Contribute to Quality of Life

Some factors that contribute to the quality of life include health, economy, basic needs, as well as life. If a country meets all four of these needs, the quality of life will likely be high and in countries lacking in certain branches, their quality of life will be less compared to another country. It is important to remember that quality of life is largely influenced by our bias and what we believe to be a good quality of life. For someone living in poverty, their standards of a good quality of life would be very different compared to someone living in the top 1%.

Economic Globalization has a huge impact on poverty rates around the world. "Economic globalization refers to the increasing interdependence of world economies as a result of the growing scale of cross-border trade of commodities and services, the flow of international capital and wide and rapid spread of technologies" (Shangquan 2000). "During the industrial revolution, the western powers produced most of the manufactured goods, which were then sold to international markets" (Green 2012). International trade first began during the Columbia exchange and since then, we have become more and more reliant on trade. While becoming reliant on other countries for products does have its upsides, the downsides to this were revealed when COVID-19 hit. At the start of 2019, you could have just about anything shipped to your house in a day on Amazon, and after Covid hit, products began to be delayed by weeks or even months. For people living in poverty, this would have hit them much harder. A lot of the products we are able to buy here are from China and the cost is quite low. If trade was to slow or even stop, cheep items that people in poverty rely on may become non-existant.

The current world population is 7,900,00,000 and climbing. The countries with the most rapid increase in population are developing countries such as Nigeria, Syria, and Angola. In the last 20 years, Nigeria’s population has increased from 122 million to 206 million. Because Nigeria has such a harsh climate, they are unable to grow enough food to sustain themselves. In 2021, “Nigeria imported $10 Billion to meet its food and agricultural production shortfalls” (International Trade Administration 2021). In 2021, nearly 83 million or 40% of Nigerians are living in poverty, and according to population graphs, the population increase is showing no signs of slowing down. “It is estimated that the number of poor people will increase to 90 million, or 45% of the population, in 2022” (Onyeiwu 2021). Due to an increase in population, the Nigerian government has to spend more and more money on importing goods and it’s because the amount they are able to grow and harvest is not sustainable to the population.

Demography and sustainability are very closely related because they are both based on population. Demography focuses on the implications of changes in population size to help predict future needs providing insight on how to better their infrastructure. As can be seen in the image above, the United States population is stable whereas Nigeria’s population is rapidly increasing. Nigeria will now have the insight as to what they need to prepare to make their infrastructure more efficient. One of the consequences that Nigeria is currently facing is the poverty rate. More than 80 million people are living below the poverty line and as the population is projected to continue increasing, the number of people living in poverty will increase as well.

For people living in poverty, migration is seen as a way to start a new life. “Migrants often triple their wages after moving to a new country, helping millions of migrants and their relatives at home escape poverty” (Global Migration, 2018). While migration has helped millions of people escape poverty, the people who are experiencing the worst of it have the hardest time getting away. This is because to migrate you need to have enough money to get somewhere new as well as to get settled down. This is one of the reasons that migration has become more difficult.

How Economics Grow and Change

Economics is not only money and currency but it is the foundation between nations. Economics is about trade agreements that not only focus on lowering tariffs but also forming a relationship with that country. Global trade has increased so much over the years that we have become dependent on one another for our survival. These agreements make countries think twice before declaring war. While there will be consequences to the soldiers fighting in the war, there’s a chance it will have an even bigger impact on the citizens back home. By declaring war, any trade between those two nations would stop and the consequences could be devastating to the citizens. While many think that war is decided by governments, economics has such a large role as well. If not for our reliance on one another for survival (global trade), the world could be very different. While economics is definitely a cause of poverty, it is essential for global survival and poverty is, unfortunately, one of the many side effects that come with it.

Poverty exists all over the world but the impact it has on people will vary depending on several factors. Number one is their location. Depending on the location that you live, living in poverty may not affect your quality of life whereas, in other countries, it has a major impact on quality of life and fundamental needs. Number two is the system of government. People living under a dictatorship ruling may think that their life is great whereas someone living under a democratic ruling would likely have very different views. Lastly, it depends on the nation's economic situation. This breaks countries up into groups based on their income level, economic agreements, and economic development. The image above shows countries grouped based on their income level. After analyzing this image, I made the connection that the countries with the lowest income rates had a large percentage of the population living in poverty.

Take the European Union, for example, it was formed in the hopes of ending any wars between the European countries. They figured that if they formed this union between the nations and started to rely on other nations for certain products, it could prevent any future conflicts that may arise. This was however good for the common good but it also really benefitted the less fortunate. This agreement made it easier for people to migrate potentially allowing them to get jobs.

World views is something that many people don't consider. They look at something through one lens and don't even consider why the other side might believe what they do. When looking at poverty from a citizens perspective, they would see this as being an issue that should be fixed by the government. The government would view poverty as something that is everywhere and that there is nothing they can do about it because it is inevitable. Lastly, when looking at poverty from the perspective from someone who has lived in poverty, they would likely have the strongest opinions towards this topic. It is always important to consider the different sides of every issue to get the best understanding possible.
