1) The Realization

In this picture, there is a trail of footsteps on a beach leading towards the unknown. The moon shines brightly on the oceans surface and illuminates the entire beach. The moon is hidden behind clouds, yet still shines brightly on the sand. The ocean which the moon shines upon is very dark- almost black. The sand is a somewhat unrealistic and vibrant color of gold. There are shadows of unknown figures on the sand that look like buildings or people- either one is probable. This photograph is simply called "Night Footprints". The title does not give any clues to a deeper meaning behind the photograph. The viewer can see that these are obviously footprints on a beach at night and the title of the image does not help fold back any layers to this picture. The footprints are put into focus, causing the viewer to wonder where they lead to. The uncertainty of their direction gives the image a myserteous vibe. The moon behind the clouds ties in with the ocean because the ocean is highlighted by the moonlight. The ray of light on the ocean, in a way, is drawing attention towards the footprints. The photographer of this image wants all the focus to be on the footprints because it sparks wonder and suspicion. The photographer of this image is trying to arouse ambiguity by pointing the footprints into an unknown direction. The entire purpose of the image is to highlight the mystery of it by pointing the beam of moonlight in the direction of the footprints and having a dark surrounding.

I chose this specific image because it has a backstory. This image is considered cursed. Many houses that had a copy of this painting inside burned down, while the painting remained untouched by the flames. I believe the curse of this image and the fact that he is in tears goes well with what is happening in the book at this point in time The world around the Boy is burning- much like how the surroundings of the painting were burning. But, the Boy remains alive and, like the painting, untouched. In this painting, a little boy is crying. The only thing that is seen in this picture is the boys face, which makes it the main focus. His eyes are big and teary, much like how a toddlers eyes would look after crying. The colors used are shades of brown and tan, giving it a quite boring look. The boy also seems to be a bit disheveled, possibly contributing to why he is crying. This artwork is titled "The Crying Boy", painted by Giovanni Bragolin. The name is pretty straightforward and the viewer is not given much to dissect because the name is what we are seeing. The title does not give much background to why the boy is crying. The only colors in this painting are very bleak, and bleak colors are often associated with sadness. The only relationship that this image shows is the relationship between the boy crying and how disheveled he looks. The artist could be showing us how his tears are related to his current life condition. I believe the artist is trying to convey the fact that the boy is upset over his current life status due to the fact that his clothes look tattered and his hair is a bit messy.

In this photograph, there is an overturned grocery cart. There are a few items remaining in the cart, but for the most part, it looks as if someone raided it. The cart looks old and rusty, as if it has been there for a while. It lays in the middle of a beach. The beach is dirty and scattered with debris. The sky is filled with rolling clouds, as if it is about to storm. The grocery cart is put into focus in this photograph and takes up the majority of the frame. The inside of the cart is extremely detailed- there is seaweed hanging on the inside and random objects scattered throughout. This draws the focus to the grocery cart and makes the viewer wonder about the backstory of this grocery cart. The dark clouds in the background give the image a looming, eerie feeling. There is no other object on the beach, so the grocery cart feels lonely and desolate. The title of this image is "Human Waste", photographed by Alan Cleaver. Someone left this cart here and it has now become waste. The viewer has cause to wonder how the cart ended up on the beach and why. This relates to The Road because humans are dying and being tortured all around them, making them seem like human waste. The image makes the viewer wonder what the purpose of the cart being left here is. At some point, someone abandoned an entire grocery cart on the beach. The most important relationship in this picture is between the grocery cart and grocery cart. The beach is supposed to be a beautiful place, but in this image, it is littered with garbage. The grocery cart shows the severity of the waste around the beach. The darkness in the sky contrasts to the beach, which is supposed to be beautiful. This image is showing a darker side to something that is supposed to bring joy and mirth. The artist is trying to pull away the sugar coating that is associated with the beach by showing a darker side of it. The photographer is also trying to make the viewer ponder the reason the cart is there. In The Road, humans are treated as if they are worthless. They are laid out on the side of the street and treated as if they were trash. This picture is a representation of how they are treated- abandoned and unimportant.

In this picture there is a man with a grocery cart filled with items. The man is seated on the sidewalk next to a cart that is overflowing with items. He is wearing soiled clothing and his belongings look dirty and extremely worn down. The colors used in this picture are very dark and look grimy. The wall that the man is next to is stained. The area where he sits is disheveled and looks as if he sleeps there. The items in the shopping cart are overflowing but tied down with rope, making it look like as if the person who pushes the cart is always on the move. The man is wearing minimal clothing, making it seem like he does not own much. The shopping cart seems to be the main focus of the image because it is larger and is the focal point. It is the center of attention because it shows how uprooted this man's life is. There is no official name for this picture, but it is described as a homeless man on the streets of Paris. Those who travel there go because of its romantic appeal and beautiful reputation. In reality, the city is dirty and there are people like this homeless man living on the street. The description of the image tells the viewer the homeless man's current situation, but not his background. The only things in focus in this image are the man and the grocery cart. The wall that the man is sitting on is quite dirty, adding to how poor his conditions are. The mans facial expression is very plain and not expressing much emotion. This does not give the viewer much background on the homeless man, leaving it up to them to decide why he is homeless. The purpose of this image is to capture the dark side behind a beautiful place. The argument and message that this photograph is expressing is that everything is not what it seems. Although Paris is considered the "city of love", the poverty and condition of its homeless people is astonishing.

This picture is quite disgusting. The only things seen in this photograph are a pile of clothes on the ground. These clothes were once colorful and pristine, but have been stained with decay and dirt. Among these articles of clothing are bone fragments. A few pieces of broken ribs and an entire scapula lay among the rubble. The lighting is dull and nothing in particular is brought into focus. By doing this, the photographer is making a statement. Human bones lay in the middle of rubble, but they do not stand out to the naked eye immediately. The mixture of bones and dirty clothing in one area is making the statement that the lives of these humans which were killed were not important enough to be separated. This shows the unimportance of human life. The photographer, Shannon Scully, entitled this photograph "Clothing and Bones". The name is quite a chilling one because it is comparing two things that are not alike. Human life is supposed to be cherished, while clothing is supposed to be meaningless. By placing the words "clothing" and "bones" together, it desensitizes the viewer to the idea that these bones were once people, and makes them think of it as just another object in a cluster of items. Nothing is the main attraction of this photograph because everything looks the same and is in the same focal point. The purpose of this picture was to not have a focal point in order to convey the idea that human life is treated the same as a pile of trash. This image was taken Kigail Memorial. This memorial is to honor the 250,000 who died in the genocide against the Tutsi (formerly called the Rwandan genocide), which took place in 1994. This genocide took place during a Civil War and tension between the government and its people. I believe this image relates to the situation in The Road because we are unsure what could have caused the desolation that is their lives. The unimportance of life is a common theme within The Road, as well as during the Rwandan genocide. In both situations humans were often treated as if they were not living and breathing creatures. This photograph is making a social remark on the treatment of humans. The dirty clothing mixed in with the bones is conveying the idea that in this scenario, human life is just as important as a pile of clothes. The entire overtone of the picture is dark due to the grime that has collected on the clothing and not a single light or clean piece remains.
