Negligence cases can happen because of little things such as slipping on a wet floor. It is important to make sure precautions are taken to prevent and warn the public so you don't get sued!

Be aware of what is considered negligent before trying to file a lawsuit! Just because the store is out of the product you want does not mean they were negligent. Think about the duty the business has to you.

Drivers have a duty to stop at cross walks for pedestrians. If you hit a person with your car in a crosswalk, you likely will be facing a negligence lawsuit!

If you see a hazard in public, you should inform a worker. What you see as a spill on the floor could lead to a big lawsuit. Let someone know if you see any danger!

Jurisdiction

Jurisdiction is important when bringing a case to court. If multiple multiple courts have jurisdiction, you can pick which one you bring the suit to. Being aware of the jurisdictions is important especially when filing appeals!

Where does a case start?

A case cannot usually just start in the Supreme Court. You must start in the correct lower jurisdiction and appeal the rest of the way up!

Multiple Supreme Courts?

Before starting this class I had no idea that states can have their own Supreme Courts. After visiting the Kansas Supreme Court, I would love to work there sometime in the future!

Since learning about the procedures of the court, my dream is to be a judge. I would love to start as an attorney and work my way up. I think being a judge on the Kansas Supreme Court would be super cool!

Women in Court

Everyday, Professor Watson's outfits helped show me that women can still dress fashionable while also being professional! It also reminded me that people in the legal field can have lives outside of the law. I would love to work in law while still being myself and keeping my sense of style!

Civil Law!

Learning about civil law has really inspired me! After learning about civil and criminal law, I think civil law would suit me better. I think there is too much pressure involved with criminal law. Civil is interesting with not as much pressure!

Structure of Civill Cases

There is a certain procedure that must be followed to file a civil suit. A complaint must first be filed. I was not aware that the defendant could disagree and then file a counterclaim. Getting a basis of this information will help me in my career in the future.

Dismissal v. Summary Judgment

I think learning the difference between a dismissal and a summary judgment is a huge concept in the law. This took me a while to fully understand the difference between the two concepts. Because this was the first big challenge I have had in college, I think it pushed me and encouraged me to work harder in my studies.

Car Accidents

Because of a major car accident I was involved in, learning about car crash claims has really interested me. I think it did push me to be curious about civil law. If I had to pick a specialty right now it would be personal injury. I would choose this because my car accident gave me severe injuries and I do not think I was compensated fairly. I would like to help people get compensated fairly!

Filing a civil suit

A lot of common people do not where to start when filing a civil claim. Now that I have a bit of knowledge, I would like to help educate others on the process. I think it should be taught in high schools. I think every person should understand the basics of legal processes.

Learning about negligence has made me more cautious about being negligent. I am watching out more when I drive. I am also thinking about precautions I can take at work so no negligence cases are brought on because of me.

Pushing through

Sometimes I would get frustrated with how unfair the law is. After taking a step back, I could see it is not a perfect system. Seeing the flaws makes me want to be a part of the field even more. I would like to help everyone get the legal action they deserve!

Something so important that Intro to Law has helped me with is knowing legal terms. There are so many things that I just did not know the term for. I think expanding my legal vocabulary will give me a bit of a head start in future classes I will take.

Furthering my education

All the information we've learned in class has reminded me that I am one step closer to law school. Law school is something that has always been a dream of mine. Everyday when I come to class I am excited to be closer to making that dream a reality!
