In the community within the puritans, teenagers were less important than others. These teens had nothing to do  except reading the Bible. There were no phone, CD, TV. This is how teenagers were interested in what "witch" was saying to them. It was very interesting for them to just listen to what "witch" had to say to them even though they knew it was not true. The chosen ones to go to heaven are called "elect" and people who are not "elect" cannot be saved to go to heaven even with good works. Good work in life cannot save himself to go to heaven. There was no way to figure out if one is "elect" or not, so most puritans pretended that they are the "elect." The limited atonement is the idea that Jesus came to this world in order to save sinners, but only the "elect." Arthur Miller named this play "The Crucible," because he wanted to purify the substance, which is America. When things are heated up, they let out all the bad stuff. Puritans believed satan exists because there were things that they could not imagine to happen. Such as mental health issues, and natural disasters, they blamed it on the devil.
