Tesco use vertical displays of popular products as it puts them more easily in a customers line of sight. On the other hand they use horizontal display for less popular products. This benefits Tesco as the more a product stands out the more likely it is to catch customers attention therefore they are more likely to purchase products.

Tesco use this in order to create a feeling of individual shops within the store in each of the sections, for example the fish monger section is designed to look like an actual fish mongers. This creates the idea that Tesco take time in creating the store layout which makes the products seem more exclusive as they aren't all bundled together.

Topshop segment their products by event so when customers are looking for a specially themed outfit for an event it is easier for them. For example Topshop sell festival themed clothing during the summer season for when events like Leeds fest, Glastonbury and cream fields take place. This allows Topshop to have more sales as they are selling products which are exactly what customers are looking for therefore better meeting the wants and needs of a customer.
