First Week on the PGCert./ ALT HE : being a new student 2019-20 by PGCertHE Greenwich

Some of the potential learning from PGCertHE/ALTHE can come from reflecting on your experience of being a student on the programme - and relating that to your own students and your teaching . So - please post here any thoughts about one or more of these questions :
1. What is it like, being a new student at the start of the programme? might this experience inform your practice?
2. How do you, as a teacher in HE, help your new students?
3. What has helped or not helped, in your own transition into this programme?

TO ADD YOUR CONTRIBUTION: double click on the map and a new box will pop up for you to write. You can either add your name, or leave your comment anonymously.

Being a student as an adult

My first experience as an adult student was in Tokyo. I studied an intensive four week CELTA course, which is a level four certificate in English Language Teaching. I have always done a distance MA. I consider the most important thing to do when starting a course is to find your way around all the resources on the Moodle or VLE, and so I always pull this up myself on my first lesson with students, and show them what is available.

1. First thought, curiosity. 2. Depends a bit on the course, but if it fits the course: Allowing enough time to talk to them, so they can express what they think/desire, what they struggle with etc. 3. It doesn’t feel like a transition (yet), since my daily job is all about learning (teaching) and gaining knowledge (research).

Well having just finished my PhD I never thought I would be back as a student so soon. Having said that I am very intrigued and excited to hear and share experiences of teaching. I believe in the power of reflection and conversations as a an integral part of learning growing and becoming. My biggest goal is to learn how I can get my students to be more engaged in their learning and having conversations about what they are learning in the classroom. Already I am learning and getting ideas...including the many aspects of Zoom, Google Slide Presentation and Padlet as collaborative platforms to engage students.

I think starting a new course is a good way to remind lecturers/teachers how new students on their courses might feel.
Currently, I feel a mixture a of excitement and anxiety. I am looking forward to learning new things and being able to use this in my new role as a lecturer practitioner. But I am also anxious about managing the workload and maintaining a good work/life balance. I have been trying to remember how I managed on previous courses! It's time to get organised and prepared. Something we are always telling our new students.

I feel like I have been a “serial student” since graduating as a midwife from UoG in 2011 and I seem to keep gravitating back to uni. After leaving school (many years ago!) with no qualifications, I now have a BSc and an MSc under my belt and have renewed my interest in learning. I’ve been practising as a midwife and Health Visitor until very recently and completed my Specialist Practice Teacher course, and because of my experience as a “serial student”, feel I’m able to relate more easily with my students as it still feels very fresh in my mind. Teaching in practice has been continual but teaching to a classroom feels very different, so I’m looking forward to learning how to prepare myself and develop my confidence, knowledge and skills in this area.
Theresa
