Quite frankly he made me a much better player and put ODU on the college baseball map. He enjoyed my academic success as well. He made us all better!

I played for Newman my first two years at ODU. I never appreciated his knowledge of the game within the game. Tough, dedicated and committed everyday. I came to ODU with a large freshman class of 15 plus guys and I know he was challenged with us with his previous success. He coached us hard every day and may have broke a few bats puts some dents in the bench. He just loved the game. Sad day for the ODU family. Rest In Peace coach.

He had a major impact and influence on my life as he has done with all the guys that played and coached for him. He put ODU baseball on the map and the memories and friendships that I have till this day I will cherish forever. He brought us all together guys from all walks of life. We lost a baseball legend today. Thanks for everything Coach! We will miss you.

I was Coach Newman’s first equipment manger when he arrived at ODU. He inherited a team of young guys hungry for success. We worked hard, quickly learned a new culture, and began to understand the new expectations of success for ODU baseball. He made us one unit, and very competitive very quickly. Our teammate Jeff Beard said it best, he made us brothers forever. God Bless his family during this difficult time. He touched our lives forever. Mark Bennett. ODU ‘82

I covered Mark at TV-13 and we became friends. My family was into baseball when I was growing up, visiting the Yankees training camp during the days of Stengel, Mantle, Maris, Berra, etc. My father played for Norfolk Division under Bud Metheny and taught us the game as the MIT-trained engineer that he was, as a system to understand and perfect. So, it was with that background that I met and quickly grew to respect and admire Mark as a coach. And what a drive to win! We played racquetball at the Downtown Y a few times and I never beat him, even when I thought I really had him! I was shocked and saddened to hear this. I enjoyed our friendship during his time in Norfolk very much.

I became a D1 umpire Mark’s first year at ODU. We called him the Bobby Knight of college baseball. He was extremely intense but always very professional.
He made us better umpires just as he made his players better. (At least those who didn’t get scared off.) And those teams - players, coaches and managers - it was so much fun to work their games.
Long after he left ODU, I had a student who idolized Derek Jeter. One call to Mark, and she got a personal message and autograph from Jeter. That was Mark Newman - intense but professional on the field and intensely human in life.
Great baseball man. Better human being.
Pat Mileur

Mark laid a solid foundation for the ‘modern day’ baseball program at ODU. I watched his teams compete in the Sun Belt conference which was quite a successful conference in those days. As I recall, Mark was a tough task master but one whose players respected him and as a result learned more about the important game of life. My thanks to him and I’ll always remember his competitiveness.
