Senior Lecturer in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I research on current and future electrical networks and the reliability of their interactions with emerging technologies. These are fancy explanations. To put it simply, my role is to keep the lights on!

Fun fact about power system:
1) There was a "current war" in the 1800's (if i am right) between the then rich and famous investor/businessman Thomas Edison and his young prodigy Nicola Tesla. The civilization at that time was just beginning to develop electrical networks. Edison was a champion of DC system and Tesla supported AC system. In order to prove that DC system is better, Edison has gone as far as building an electric chair (powered by AC current) to show to the world that AC system was dangerous, which eventually brought to the invention of electric chair as we all know. Fast forward a few years later, Tesla won the "war" and the whole world adopted AC system due to it being more cost efficient. We all now use AC system, but DC system has found its application recently too.

2) Tesla was researching on wireless power transfer. He proposed that we can harness the electromagnetic movement at the earth core and transmit electricity wireless-ly throughout the world for free. Towards the end of this project, his funding was stopped abruptly, which was funded by George Westinghouse - an important and rich electrical utility owner at that time (still exist in US today). This project was also classified as confidential by the CIA.

I aspire to rise up the rank and be a Professor one day in USM. I mean, who doesn't want that? :)

I hope I can unearth new skills in PnP. That being said, skills that are essential but are not currently aware of

Hi everyone!I am Jasy Liew Suet Yan from the School of Computer Sciences (CS). You can call me “JC”. My main area of expertise is in the detection of emotions in text. My research vision is to help develop systems that are more emotion-sensitive as a way to enhance human interactions with computers. I also have very keen interests in sentiment analysis, text mining, social media analysis, natural language processing and affective computing. Ever since I started with USM a year ago, I have taught Principles of Programming, and Database Design and Organization. I hope to be able to teach courses closer to my areas of specialization down the road. One course I am really excited to teach is the Machine Learning course for Masters of Data Science students in the coming Semester 2. I am also involved in providing R training under our Data Science Certificate program. My biggest aspiration as an academic in USM is to be able to advance our young minds to be more critical problem solvers and to help them realize their full potential in making the world a better place to live in.From this P&P course, I hope to learn useful teaching and learning tools to make my classroom a more effective environment for learning to happen. I would also to learn more about how to plan and develop the syllabus of a new course. Most importantly, I would like to find out more on the resources and support the university provides to the instructors and how to access them.

Assalamualaikum WBT and Hi everyone! My name is Siti Rahyla Rahmat. You can call me Rahyla or Yla. I am from School of Social Sciences.I teach Development Economics as well as Environmental and Natural Resources Economics. My research areas are Bio-based Economy, Environmental Economics, Energy Economics, Ecological Economics, Natural Resource Economics and Science Policy analysis for Sustainable Development. My aspiration as an academic in USM is to inspire students to have ‘grit’. According to Angela Lee Duckworth, 2013, grit is passion and perseverance for long term goals. In simple words, I hope students will not come to my lecture because they have to and to pass exams or just to get A grade but because they enjoy my lecture; they feel touched, inspired and motivated by my lecture. In learning outside of classrooms, students should have a passion in learning and in pursuing their dreams. I hope I could learn on how to make my lecture and class more effective, interesting and inspiring. This is my favourite quote by Paulo Coelho “Fight for your dreams and your dreams will fight for you”.

Good morning all!

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Shankar Karuppayah and I just joined USM June 2016. I am currently attached in National Advanced IPv6 Centre (NAv6). NAv6 is a research centre that focuses research on next generation Internet (and other relevant research areas as well).

My domain of expertise/research would be Cybersecurity in general and botnets or malware in specific. Besides that, I am also actively involved in several projects that are related to Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 technologies.

Since last year, I have been teaching several courses for postgraduate students (we have our own Masters program called M.Sc. Internet Engineering). The courses that I am teaching are listed below:

1. "Internet Communication Protocols"
It is one of the three core subject of our MSc Internet Engineering programme.

2. "Special Topics in Next Generation Internet"
This is an elective subject where the students are exposed to the latest trends and issues pertaining Next Generation Internet.

Finally, this upcoming semester we are offering a new executive Masters program called M.Sc. Embedded Systems in collaboration with CS, EE, and CEDEC. In this course, I am involved in teaching a subject called "Real Time Operating Systems".

I hope that I am able to contribute as a fellow academician and educator of USM to generate critical thinkers and high-quality researchers of the next generation.

I hope to learn the correct (as well as creative and innovative) teaching and learning techniques that can be applied in my teaching activities. Most importantly, I want to learn how my knowledge can be channeled to the students in the most effective manner. Besides that, I would also like to grab this opportunity to establishing networking among other USM academicians. This would be very helpful for the years to come .. for all of us :)

See you all tomorrow!

Salam and Hi all.

I am Azniwati Abd Aziz from School of Industrial Technology, Division of Bioresource, Paper and Coatings Technology. I am responsible to spread the love of Coatings Technology to our undergraduate students through Raw Materials and Coatings Chemistry (give them an insight on the materials used to create surface coatings such as paint and the reactions involved in turning monomer to polymer-yeah the theoretical part where they get the feeling to pretend to be Albert Einstein), Coatings Laboratory 1 (the hands-on time where the modified spirit of Thomas Edison “I-have-not-failed-I-have-just-found-10,000-ways-that-won’t-work-but-I-have–to-submit-the-lab-report-by-the-end-of-the-semester-“ is really needed especially when the monomer is sooo resistant to turn to polymer), Advanced Coatings Technology (radiation curing to sustain our beloved planet) and to invoke our undergraduates passions’ for research, I teach Experimental Design with Computer Applications. For my research, I would like to express myself as ‘surfactant lady’, where mixing the ‘unmixing’ is a priority. Without surfactant, the milk will be separated into two parts; the fat and the water. However, my passions are focus in the mixing of polymers with water for surface coating and harden it with UV or solar radiation. My aspiration is to be a balance academic, like a surfactant that can hold two parts together in many phases. I hope I can get more insight from this P&P session to achieve my aspiration.

ABD KARIM ALIAS
ASSALAMUALAIKUM & HELLO! I am a Professor of Food Technology at the School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and current Director of Centre for Academic Excellence (CDAE), USM.

I've been teaching for almost 24 years. I'm very passionate about learning and education. I believe our role as educators goes beyond transmitting knowledge — our role is to nurture our students, the future nation builders, to become lifelong learners — to teach them the skills of 'learn how to learn' and to teach them the appreciation and the love for knowledge.

As Socrates said,
I cannot teach anybody anything; I can only make them think.

Hi Prof, it is an interesting one. There are ups and downs but it is still a challenging one. It is still my choice of career. Cheers Goh

Karim 12mo
So, you are quite certain that this is your path. If you had your way, what is ONE thing you would change to help young academics to prosper in in their career?

Anonymous 12mo
Hi Prof, if I have the power to change, I would like to have a flexible learning and not as rigid as current PnP. The way of assessment also could be more versatile.

Wslm, Prof Karim.

Karim 12mo
Hi Dr Mohd Rosli! What do you think the most difficult challenge so far being an academic in USM?

Anonymous 12mo
Hi Prof Karim, the most difficult challenge so far is the student attitude, especially to have a two-way conversation. However, seems like the problem-based learning could help this. Hopefully, I could grab more techniques during PnP

Karim 12mo
Well, the PnP program is not so much about HOW but more of WHAT and WHY. The HOW TO can be learned through series of CDAE workshops throughout the year. Check it out!

Very interesting research area, JC. I 'd like to suggest that you collaborate with people from education or management to apply for a research grant on humanising online learning. There's a lot of emotional aspect involved.

Karim 12mo
By the way JC, you have been in USM for a year. have you attended any workshops organised by CDAE?

Anonymous 12mo
@Prof. Karim, does kursus PTM count? ;)

Anonymous 12mo
@Prof. Karim, thank you for the thoughtful suggestion! Humanizing online learning is interesting indeed! Questions are already formulating in my mind... What are features or aspects of emotions are effective to humanize online learning? How can instructors leverage these features to make online instruction and student involvement more effective? My my my... You are really making me think on a Saturday. Perhaps USM online learning system is a good starting point of investigation? Would really be a nice research project if I am find suitable collaborators I enjoy working with :)

Karim 12mo
Dr Fitreena, what is your aspiration as an academic in USM? If you are given a choice between teaching track and research track, which one would you choose?

fitreena 12mo
I honestly prefer research track as i am involved more with patient and treatment. I hope to help more breast cancer patient not just via drug developement but via new surgical and diagnostic technique as nowadays i encounter younger age group having this distrastous disease. In term of teaching, I believe in everything I do in future can be a basis and part of teaching.

Karim 12mo
Fitreena, how do you think teaching and research can complement each other?

fitreena 12mo
Every research we do should be aim for teaching, no just towards student but also towards the general population. Knowledge has no boundaries...

Hi colleagues, I'm Yap, from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, USM.

I teach Medicinal Chemistry courses and research on design and discovery of novel therapeutic drugs.

As an academic and a researcher, I aspired to train more medicinal chemists with the hope that one day, we Malaysian will be able to come up with our own blockbuster drug.

With the evolution of teaching and learning approaches in conjunction with the rise of digital era, I hope to be exposed with up-to-date and highly effective resources and techniques in teaching and learning, that can be translated to the benefits for both teachers and learners.

Hi Prof Karim, it's really hard to tell at this stage, considering the limited funding that we have at the moment. But I hope that I would be highly recognised by the peers in my field 10 years from now as I always believe that if we really want something, we will find a way to achieve it.

Hi Anonymous, a blockbuster drug is a highly popular drug with potentially high revenue generation. One good example was Panadol where every household would know and have it.

Anonymous 12mo
Hi Shamani.. Anis tasnim here... See u again in P&P course.. Did u think our student fully utilized our e-learning portal?

Anonymous 12mo
Hi Prof. Thus far I've only taught 1 course in 1 semester. There's no major challenge that I've encountered. Probably only something within myself. To incorporate ICT in teaching. As we're facing Millennials.. I guess the workshops by cdae or p&p would surely help me to face these challenges.

Anonymous 12mo
Hi anis. Hope to see u again soon. E-learning portal, yes. To download notes etc. And i also update abt quiz n assignments there. So at least for these the students have to access the portal. Otherwise I myself not sure how else it can be fully utilized. Tq

Teh Jiashen

Hi Dr Teh! How do you reckon your academic journey so far? If you could turn back the clock, would you take the same path?

Anonymous 12mo
Hello Professor Karim. My academic journal so far has been challenging but still manageable. Theses challenges are difficulties in securing grant and research students but these are also face by everyone. Hence, I welcome these challenges and i think they are fun to be dealt with. As for teaching, I don't find any major difficulties thus far. Perhaps, it is the electrical engineering students that have been very cooperative with me. For that, I thank them! Apart from academic, as an engineer, I'm also responsible to the society. That being said, I'm also in the process of my professional registration with Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). The process of this application will bridge the gap between academic and industry. If i turn back the clock, will I still take the same path? hmm...most probably yes, I will. I enjoy every bit of my PhD journey and the struggles that come with it.

Anonymous 12mo
Salam Afif, saya Teoh. Jumpa esok ya.

Anonymous 12mo
Salam prof Karim, in my opinion Teaching-Research Nexus emphasis on enquiry based learning experiences that develop research skills and critical thinking. It also can be express in the qualities of graduate, through the development of critical and creative thinking, problem solving skills and also can apply disciplinary and professional research methods. Teaching-Reseach Nexus also can be the core of active student engagement, through which students reflexively, contribute to their own learning, encouraged through practice-based learning and also can stimulate experiential learning. From Teaching-research nexus student will know three main outcome, firstly, students will learn authentic enquiry; second students will learn about research;and third students will learn to do research effectively.if this technique apply in the educational system, student and lecturer can get more benefit in term of knowledge, learn about research and also have additional skills to do research. so its can complement teaching and research, especially to the student

My teaching and research areas are occupational safety and health (OSH) (focusing on risk assessment, OSH management, noise, and fire as well as explosion).

My aspiration as an academic in USM is that I believe I might save lives (if I work hard enough or smart enough or even I am lucky enough).

Aristophanes once wrote, roughly translated; "Youth ages, immaturity is outgrown, ignorance can be educated, and drunkenness sobered, but STUPID lasts forever."

Therefore I hope from this P&P course, I'll find ways to make sure my students not going to be STUPID (in the context of attitude and behaviour).

Thanks and see you guys this Monday

Askm Dr Hafiidz. I thought you misspelt your name :). My question for you: If you had the chance to devise a new curriculum to ensure our graduates will not be labeled STUPID by the employer, what and how would you do it? Tough question, ha? ;)

Anonymous 12mo
W'salam Prof. I've checked with my parents once (when i was around 7 years old), it is the right spelling :). I was concern as well hahaha. Regarding your question, it's a tough one, but I'll try my best to answer it. Firstly, in this quote, I perceived that STUPID represents items related to attitude and behaviour. I would like to separate it into two parts, the industrial needs (including employer) and personal needs. In terms of industry, I guess we are gearing towards producing graduates with more complete and comprehensive skill sets to work in the industry through iCGPA and 2u2i approaches. Both of these approaches do have their own strengths that could be capitalized. What concerns me, is the route of implementing them in terms of resources (budget, personnel, and time) as well as setting-up ambitious yet achievable objectives in a proper time frame. I am more interested and would like to focus on the personal needs. Students have to understand its not all about grades, numbers and monetary gain. This kind of education has to be informal and through examples (i haven't figure it out). We need to provide the students with compassion and grit. It's about what they can give to the community, to others. We need to equip them in terms of human capacity to be leaders of the industry and country. I think I love to increase the HUMANIZING element in our curriculum to achieve this intangible objectives. Sorry for the lengthy answer :).

Karim 12mo
The lengthy answer is fine. Appreciate it! It shows you put some thought and tried to articulate the best you can.

Karim 12mo
The words COMPASSION and GRIT...these are the attributes we want to inculcate in our students. Good topic for discussion. Let others share their thought on this.

Anonymous 12mo

Salam Prof karim. The active learning workshop has been held in School of Computer Sciences during the semester break last semester, and therefore, we were encouraged to apply those techniques learnt. Few active learning strategies that I have applied in my class such as "opening question" before the lecture started, "think-pair share" and "turn to neighbour summaries" where given a question, student answer individually before exchange and explain their answer in pair. Of course instructor need to be the moderator and finally randomly pick one student to share their answer with whole class. It really helps me engaging with the students in class. For your second question, in my opinion, THREE important attributes of 21st century educator are : Knowledge, Empathy and Encouragement of higher order thinking. Thanks :) -Athiyah

Mohamad Hafizi Abu Bakar
Assalamualaikum dan Salam Sejahtera

I'm Hafizi from Bioprocess Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology. I teach several subjects such as Practical in Cell and Tissue Culture Technology and Fundamental of Stem Cell Technology. My research interests are devoted, but are not limited to, cellular metabolomics towards elucidation of pathophysiological mechanisms of Type 2 diabetes and its correlation with inflammation and mitochondrial functions.

My aspirations as an academic in USM are to encourage mastery, competency, transformational and life-long learning, general skill transference of skills (application), and critical thinking. As I'm teaching science subjects, I knew not every student would be a scientist; not every person NEEDS to be a scientist. But, every person, in my opinion, needs critical thinking skills.
Also, of course I want to be a prominent researcher in my field and be able to contribute to community as a whole.

From this P&P course, I do hope that I can gain extra input and knowledge on education world in becoming a 21st century educator. As we are now dealing with 4th Industrial Revolution, I love to learn how to incorporate online learning strategies into content coursework. I would like to know and explore classroom issues that impede student success and learn how to deal with them.

Thanks

Askm Dr Hayati. This is the most thoughtful and well crafted introduction so far. Well done! This is something that I would like to see—taking any task thoughtfully. By the way, now that you are on this side of the classroom, how do you see your role as an academic to inspire students to learn for the sake of knowledge, not just for grade.

Anonymous 12mo
Wsalm Prof Karim. Thank you..and wow that is a difficult question and surely a difficult task to tackle considering our education system is exam-oriented. In my opinion and based from my little experience, one way to inspire the students to learn for the sake of knowledge is to pique their interest on the subject matter by i) showing them the logic behind a principle, ii) by having them seeing the subject from their daily life perspective and iii) to let them experience it on their own…of course for these to work requires willing participation from both parties: the teacher and the student...Honestly, this is one of the struggles I've faced..I've tried and it worked only on minority of the students. Do you mind to share your thought on this?

Ariza Sharikin Abu Bakar 12mo

Askm Dr Anis. I love chemistry as a subject because it was my favourite subject in school. I was known as a chemistry wizard! How do you instil the love for chemistry with your students?

Anonymous 11mo
Salam Prof Karim. Chemistry Wizard !!!... its amazing.. I am pretty sure that u are the wizard in everything that u love like what u have teach us for the whole 2 weeks. Tq so much Prof.... I teach adult students who are already have their own career n life. Sometimes they do not care about the subject that they take for that session. To make them instill the love for chemistry, i always motivate them to believe that chemistry is not as difficult as they think. I always make my presentation visually interesting and exciting but at the same time make the content easy to understand. I always remind them that basic knowledge and fundamental of chemistry is very important.

TEOH YEW HENG
Salam Satu Malaysia and a very good morning. My name is TEOH YEW HENG from School of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering campus.

I am working on energy related research, specifically dealing with combustion & fuel engineering, biofuels and Internal Combustion Engines.

I currently hold the position as Senior Lecturer and the subjects that I have taught thus far are: EMH 211- Thermodynamics, EMD 101- Engineering Drawing, EML 211- Engineering Laboratory 1, EMD 452- Final Year Projects (3 students have been successfully graduated), EMD 112- Conceptual Design & CAD, EME 432- Internal Combustion Engines, EML 342- Engineering Laboratory III and SHE 101- Ethnic Relations. Meanwhile, I also serve as principal investigator for USM short-term research grant with the title of Investigations of a Common Rail Direct Injection Diesel Engine Using Biofuels in Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) Mode.

My aspiration as an academic in USM is to be a great educator as well as a great researcher.

It is undeniable that for young educator like us, we have been involved and excelled in conducting research within our area of expertise during our PhD study. At the same time, I think we are indeed lack of teaching experience and, especially, engage with those of millennials. Therefore, I hope that the facilitators for this P&P course (or perhaps other P&P course mate) could enlighten and share with us a more structured yet effective teaching skill during this forthcoming P&P course.
Thank you for reading all these and see you on Monday.

Dear Dr Teoh, thank you for the thoughtful introduction. If we expect high quality work from our students, then it's just right for me to have the same expectation from the participants of the PnP.

Karim 12mo
My question to you: The career track (teaching, research, etc) will soon be implemented in USM and other public universities. What's your take on this?

Anonymous 12mo
Salam Sejahtera, Prof. Karim. Thanks for reading my post. If I deserve that option to choose, I would rather opt to balance both (perhaps equal weightage for teaching & research) provided that we have adequate time and resources to do both. By conducting teaching, we earn the first-hand experience to interact and select some of the bright students and offer them opportunity for postgraduate study. Thus, able to tab for quality candidate as human resources in stimulate our research output (mind that university rankings are weighted heavily towards research outcomes). Secondly, our students also can benefit from their respective lecturer’s research experience and be exposed to the latest research.

Karim 12mo
Well said!

Shankar Karuppayah 12mo
Apologies for interrupting. I too agree with what Dr. Teoh have mentioned (a balance between teaching and research). However, I would like to hear from all of you if you guys think doing both at the same time allows us to have a quality output in either or both teaching and research? I am one person who get engrossed when I am doing research, so much so that I prefer to devote all the time I have to complete it. I am also not sure if its the same for others out there (if it is not, then it is simply bad time management skills from my end :p). Anyways, what do you guys think about having alternate semesters to focus on either teaching or research? I believe it not only allows us to focus fully on our teaching tasks, but also allows us to take a break and allow our brain to think over our research from a new aspect. Wouldnt this be a win-win situation?

Karim 12mo
Thoughtful input, Dr Shankar. That's what I meant by meaningful interaction.

Assalammualaikum dan Salam Sejahtera, My name is AHMAD SUFRIL AZLAN BIN MOHAMED from school of Computer Sciences.

My area of research is on Image Processing. I worked on many application related to medical imaging, smart home, biomechanics and IoT.

I have taught subjects on Discrete Maths, Multimedia Technologies, Animation and Virtual Reality, Visual Computing and Image Processing ranging from year 1 to year 4 students.

I am also an MDEC certified master trainers to train teachers on Computational Thinking, Web Programming, IOS Programming and Flash ActionScript Scripting.

My aspiration as an academic in USM is to share my knowledge and skills not only to the university students but also to the community.

I hope to learn various ways of effective teaching that could help me in teaching and at the same time to make my teaching classes to be lively and active. I do believe that current students have many distractions from the technologies surrounding them that they are becoming less focus on their studies and work. I do hope that I can tap on their interest and also the technologies surrounding them to help them in their learning process. I do believe this is going to be life long learning process for me.I hope that this course could help me to achieve that.

Askm Dr Ahmad Sufril. Yes, some people say devices such as smartphone and social media are weapon of mass DISTRACTION! But can we change that perception in a positive manner? I mean by leveraging the technology to engage students inside and outside the classroom.

Shankar Karuppayah 12mo
Good Morning Dr. Sufril, seems like we do have some research interests in common. Probably we should sit in and discuss one of these days to see how we can collaborate :)

Salam Prof Karim, yes I do think we can try to get used to what they are comfortable with, and try to take advantage from it to engage them. For example if they gadget savvy, we can either use technology for teaching or maybe some other method, such as active learning to help them interact during class sessions.

Askm Dr Siti Rahyla. Do you have any idea as to the best strategies to inculcate attributes such as grit and resilience in our students?

Anonymous 12mo
Waalaikumussalam WBT Prof Karim .I'm no expert on this but I think we could 1)Ask students to reflect on their experience during internship for instance (as I am also a coordinator for an industrial training), or during field work (final year project) 2)ask student to reflect on a biography on an enterpreneur who they think are gritty (Steve Jobs for instance) 3)Ask them to name one person in their family and one high school who are resilient. And why are they resilient. Give real examples (This is so related to development economics- in poverty topic) and natural disaster (in Environmental Economics) 4)Ask students to reflect what kind of occupation requires grit and resilience? why?

Radin Firdaus 12mo
Hye Yla, see you soon - Radin

Karim 12mo
Thank you for your response, Rahyla. Reflection is a good starting point. On our part as an educator, how do we design our curriculum and delivery in such a way that we can build the desired characters such as grit and resilience?

Anonymous 12mo
@Yla, I thought Angele Lee Duckworth's TED talk was quite interesting too. Made me reflect on how I am assessing my students. I do wonder if grit is a personality trait (either you have it in you or you don't) or is it something students can learn and acquire.

Shankar Karuppayah

Hello Dr Shankar! Nice introduction. Good to see that you are working on some aspects of 4IR and Industry 4.0. How much do you think our researchers can contribute towards Industry 4.0, given that we are not driving the technology but rather we are driven by the technology?

Anonymous 12mo
Hye Shankar...Finally...Nice to know that we are going to meet soon... :) -Yla

Shankar Karuppayah 12mo
@Prof Karim: Thank you. I believe there is simply more than it meets the eye. Expertise of our researchers have not been tapped to the fullest of its potential. The good thing is, that we (USM) are definitely moving forward in the right direction to leverage our expertise and advantages. However, that doesnt mean that we stay on being idle. USM researchers need to continuously upgrade ourselves and shift towards driving the technology from now onwards. A key catalyst for that would be the collaboration among the different faculties within USM. We already have the expertise... just need to polish it from now onwards :)

Shankar Karuppayah 12mo
@Yla: Yeah! Thats true.. we would finally be meeting up :P See you tomorrow

Askm Dr Faraziera. Do you have any favourite quote related to education? If you were to change ONE thing in your classroom strategy now, what would that be?

Anonymous 12mo
Wsalam Prof Karim. if i were to change ONE thing in my classroom now is to develop positive teacher-student relations. We all want to feel cared for and valued by the significant people in our world. Students are no different. Improving students' relationships with teachers has important, positive and long-lasting implications for both students' academic and social development. Solely improving students' relationships with their teachers will not produce gains in achievement. However, those students who have close, positive and supportive relationships with their teachers will attain higher levels of achievement than those students with more conflict in their relationships. When students feel that you value and care for them as individuals, they are more willing to comply with your wishes.

Karim 12mo
Wow, I really liked the way you see the importance of fostering positive relationship between students and teacher. Well said Dr Faraziera!

Assalamu'alaikum and hello,

My name is Nur Nadiah binti Abd Hamid from School of Mathematical Sciences.

My research interests are:
1. Numerical Method: This is the study of developing approximate methods to solve mathematical problems,
2. Numerical Analysis: This is the study of analyzing approximate solutions to mathematical problems, and
3. Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD): This is the study that incorporates mathematics and computer systems to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design.

So far, I am given the tasks to teach:
1.	Calculus for Science Students,
2.	Mathematical Software Laboratory, and
3.	Curve and Surface Methods for CAGD.

I am going to handle the classes for the first time this coming semester. Therefore, I hope to learn the art of teaching as much as I could from this P&P course. My specific goals are:
1.	To be able to communicate efficiently with my students,
2.	To be able to instill the interest of continuous learning to them, and
3.	To propagate the knowledge appropriately, not by just spoon-feeding them.

My aspiration is to use my energy and knowledge the best I can to give back to the community.
It is heartwarming to read all the introductions here – geared me up for the P&P course. Let’s rock!!

Askm Dr Nur Nadiah. Mathematic, while it is an important subject but always regarded as difficult and dry. How would you change this perception and make learning mathematic interesting, fun and meaningful?

Karim 12mo
Another thing, why Mathematical Science (always regarded as Pure Sciences)? Is there an element of arts in math?

ati athiyah 12mo
Salam Dr. Nadiah, I have the same thought as Prof. Karim mentioned above because few people from Computer Science too sometimes "afraid" of Maths and we think anything regarding Math in CS subject is tough. What is your opinion on this? -Athiyah

Nur Nadiah 12mo
Wa'alaikumussalam wr. Prof. Karim. For now, I try to relate the mathematical concepts I'm about to teach to the physical applications and make use of technology for visualization. I am still searching for methods to use in my teaching but many a time, the classical approach (whiteboard and marker, blackboard and chalk) works best.

Nur Nadiah 12mo
Prof. Karim, mathematics is a tool, it can be applied in both sciences and arts. As far as I know, mathematics had been incorporated in musics, designs etc. However, mathematical sciences is focused on mathematics and sciences. In mathematics, there are areas that are regarded as an art. For example; logic and analysis. These areas are heavily connected with the philosophical ideas developed by Aristotle, Plato, Socrates etc.

Nur Nadiah 12mo
Wassalam wr. Dr. Athiyah. Yes, I agree. Mathematics is always regarded as a tough subject. In my opinion, it is as tough as any computer science subject. But since mathematics is always presented in an abstract way, many find it difficult to understand.

Hello everyone, I'm Ismail from the School of Physics!!!
Currently, I'm teacing geophysics, which has a wide applications from hydrocabon exploration, geohazard studies to environmental studies.
My current research interest is looking into land subsidence and landslides in Penang. I'm looking into how rapid urbanization is affecting the natural environment.

Aspiration: To inspire the next generation of Malaysians to become the best version of themselves. I think as lecturers and intellectuals, we have a huge responsiblity to give our all for the students, who will lead the country in the future. Also, to contribute to the committee of knowledge through research, where discussions can occur freely.

I hope to learn to be an effective teacher and balance teaching with research. Maybe learn to integrate teaching and research. From this program, I also hope to learn how to handle different students as unique individuals who can contribute to the group.

Wa'alaikum Salaam Prof Karim. I think it is important to educate the public when they are young about loving nature. It is important to educate the public that nature has its rights and that we should not exploit them for our own selfish purposes. I'm proposing field trips or programs to show the public to the effects of not caring for the environment.

Askm Dr Ahzad. The moment one stop learning one should cease teaching. Don't worry, I promise you will gain tremendous value from your time. My question to you: What is the single most important lesson you have learned being an academic for some time? How the lesson would guide you for the rest of your career in USM?

ahzad_h_a 12mo
Wassalam. Single most important lesson/value: Be patient, regardless how mad/dissapointed are you of the student, but be strict when necessary with student. This seems to be working with the students I mentored before, of course i become more friendly with them as the time progress. There are still rooms for improvement.

Salam Sejahtera and Wonderful Day Everyone.

My name is Parthiban S.Gopal. Currently I am teaching Development Studies at the School of Social Sciences. My area of specialization both in teaching and research are issues in relation to poverty and holistic development. My current programme of research focuses on formulating poverty measurement from the Multidimensional Perspective.

My aspiration as an academician in USM is to be a competent teacher and a researcher first so as to groom ‘thinking’ students and society. Secondly, being an employee I have the corporate social responsibility as well to deliver my service to the people and the country via various research program and projects.

Learning is a lifelong journey and there is always room for improvement hence I am looking forward to learn new techniques during P&P so as to enhance my teaching and research skills. Therefore, I believe P&P is one of the timely and appropriate platform to ignite so as to achieve those aspirations.

Hello Dr Parthiban! It's a pleasant surprise to see you here in this group. I liked the quote by Kural. Can you elaborate it and share your insight as how best to approach teaching to achieve impactful learning?

Anonymous 12mo
Hi Prof, Yes thank you for the comment and the question. First of all I am glad to be here so as to enhance my learning journey...we don't grow old but when stop growing we become old; so keep growing( via learning)all the time. Second, when a teacher teaches a student , who/what is important; the teaching? the teacher or student ? It is the student the teacher should give paramount importance. Why? Only when the teacher understands, caring and have so much of concern/love for the students, the teaching would be effective and hence impactful learning as the student would become more attentive and receptive on what is being taught. Ensuing from that, learning becomes fun and way of life and as the Kural rightly states; one would live by that learning. And this is important to groom future/prospective, productive, competent and human capital individual as well as leadership.

Hi Dr. Anuar, interesting area of research. Have you look into how Japan manage their waste? -Athiyah

Anonymous 12mo
Dear Dr Athiyah, I know how japanese manage their waste. Their system is what we are looking at now. Actually it goes back to people's attitude. We can be like japanese if we have first class mentalitiy in line with our world class facilities as what Gomen has provided like MRT. I could see alot of uncivilized rakyat vandalized our newly running MRT. Thats why we need to change. Hefty invstment on infrastructures does not mean anything if we are still thinking, preaching like 3 rd class mentality.

Hi Dr Anuar, why composting is not popular in our community?-nadhrah

Azni Aziz Abd Aziz 12mo
Salam Dr Anuar. Are your research area involves in biodegradibility of polymer? (Azni :D)

Anonymous 12mo
Dear Dr Nadhirah, I am now working hard to revamp composting process. In my point of view, compostinf is seen as unpromosing method for decomposition as compared to advanced waste treatment such as incinerator and sanitary landfill due to lack of understanding in thr principle of decomposition. Most of the time, leachate emission and foul smell are the major contributing factors made this methis uatteactive. Anyway, feel free to visit my Ecopro Lab to have a clear understanding of passive decomposition of organic waste.

Anonymous 12mo
Dear Dr Azni, in the current mode, I am focusing on the waste decomposition. I can see your field of expertise in biopolymer that is very useful to be explored further. When talk about green product, incorporation of biopolymer based binder is what industries are looking for! We can talk further on waste-to-wealth:biogreen-products!

Assalamualaikum, dan selamat pagi semua!
Nama saya Jestin Nordin.

Hi Everyone!
My name is Nur Syibrah Muhamad Naim, my publication name is Syibrah Naim and my nickname is Syibrah. I am from School of Computer Sciences. Currently, my research interest are notably type-2 fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic, fuzzy decision making, computing with words and optimisation. Currently I teach basic programming courses and also focus subjects in AI such as evolutionary algorithm and decision support system.

I started my career in teaching since I was a PhD student. At that time I was not happy and always think that I am not suitable to be a teacher. Unfortunately it changed when I was a lecturer at UMT.

I gained the passion even more when I came to USM. The team teaching style totally change my perception in teaching career. I have been guided by the senior and it was a hard journey but I learned a lot and now I see clearly whats teaching all about. I love students’ interactions, feedback, and excitement during my lecturer. In my class, I always hope my students have confidence with my teaching so that we will have two-way communications. I want them to approach me as a friend who will ask them back how they could possibly find the solutions (discussions).

Looking forward to getting more tips from Prof Karim and other speakers!

I am inspired and want to inspire :D

Greetings from Bee Eu
Hello, this is my second post to share abit more about myself (I'm not very good at padlet, sorry!)

I joined USM in Year 2016 with the strong encouragement from my former lecturers and current collegues.

My teaching strengths draws not from my research nor PHD, but largely on my 15 years of Industry practice in the Architecture and Construction industry. As a practicing Architect, I am passionate about Innovation in Design, being passionate and dedicated about what you do. In my professional work, I began to notice how the recent young graduates no longer possess the grit, passion and determination that was core criteria of being an Architect.

That's when I decided to become an Educator, with the aims of bringing industry expectations back into the varsity classrooms or what we call studios in HBP. My students often get doses of "wake-up" call during my lectures to remind them of the demanding working world that awaits them.

I'm truly appreciate the P+P course learning to make all of us better teachers. I look forward to the remaining boot camp training days to drill ourselves on structure, pedagogy, skills and art of teaching.

My favorite quotation on being a Teacher...
The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires.

Wishing everyone inspiring days ahead!

Bee Eu, how do you bring and incorporate your industry experience in your classroom? How do you inspire them so that they don't fall asleep during your class? Do you transmit knowledge or you allow students to CONSTRUCT knowledge?

Anonymous 12mo
Apologies Prof, for being almost last to submit intro in Padlet....Usually I keep my students intrigued with real-life exposure to how poorly prepared drawings lead to bad design being built. in that sense, guess, I transmit knowledge.
