Giovanni Da Verazzano was a famous Italian explorer. He charted The Atlantic coast of North America between the Carolina's and Newfoundland. That includes the New York Harbor in 1524. He was sent by King Francis the first of France to explore the east coast of North America and to find a route to the Pacific. Made landfall near what would be Cape Fear, Carolina. Than in early March he set sail for the northern part of the east coast. Eventually, he discovered the New York Harbor, which has a bridge today named after him. And that's how we remember him today. After his discovery he went back to Europe to share the news. Verazzano made two more voyages to North America. But unfortunately on his second voyage he was killed and eaten by the natives of one of the Lower Antilles, most likely on Guadalupe.
