The significance of the repeating phrase, “5 dollars”, is that it shows how desperate Esperanza is to have friends. She is at the point where she is willing to pay to have friends. Additionally, 5 dollars is treated by Lucy and Rachel as a big amount which shows just how poor the residents of Mango Street are.

In, “Louie, His Cousin And His Other Cousin,” Louie’s other cousin had stolen a car, showing that they don’t have money to afford one. In “Our Good Day,” it is demonstrated that $5 is a significant quantity of money to Esperanza.

In the vignette, "Our Good Day," by Sandra Cisneros, the author portrays the theme of people will do anything to have friends, through the use of repetition. In the vignette, "Our Good Day", Esperanza was more than willing to not only give away her savings but also give away part of her sister's savings just have friends. Cisneros uses the phrase, "5 dollars", over and over to emphasize the length that Esperanza would go to to have friends.
