Blu-ray discs use an, "optical storage technology" similar to DVD's or CD's; "Beneath the disc’s surface, a sequence of pits carries the information in the form of a digital (numeric) code."
The Blu-ray player uses a blue laser to read or write data to a disk (the blue laser is responsible for the name "Blu-ray")
- This laser uses a smaller profile wavelength than DVD's red laser
Blu-ray provides some 25 billion bytes of data on a single layer

An international group of electronics manufacturers developed the Blu-ray format.
The first Blu-ray product was released in Japan in 2003, but Blu-ray did not become widely available until 2006.

Blu-ray disk reading creates a greater picture quality than that of regular DVD's
Has helped high definition video displays “realize their full potential”
Blu-ray disks/players hold/output more data than standard DVD's, therefore render video with higher definition

Positive/Negative Consequences

Positive: We are able to get a better, higher definition picture
Negative: Naturally, Blu-ray costs more. However, while some view this as a negative consequence, some argue that the extra expense is worth it.

What's Next?

People are always trying to improve on current technology, especially technology that is used by many people. There is talk of possibilities of even higher definition for DVDs, but nothing is really established yet.
